From Chapter 5 As soon as you make your decision to develop a UPN bar code labeling program you have a choice to make. Will you use the HIBC Supplier Labeling Standard and obtain an HIBC Labeler Identification Code (LIC) or will you use UCC/EAN and obtain a manufacturer's identification number from the UCC? It is important to recognize that this is not a technical decision. As discussed in Chapter 4, the bar equipment you buy today will print or read the approved healthcare symbologies. Therefore, at this juncture you must make a critical business decision based on how you do business today: (1) Where you do business - nationally or internationally. (2) What channels you use - healthcare only or healthcare and retail. (3) What kind of numbering schemes you use. What kind of data bases you have. So, how do you make a decision? There are several areas for you to investigate to help with the decision process.
