Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though dry in tone and lacking the unifying vision of a single author, this wide-ranging collection of essays takes a worthy step toward establishing the distinctive migrant and immigrant history of our nation's capital. The first section of essays attempts to trace the early experiences of Native Americans, African Americans and Irish workers. More interesting are the entries on 19th- and 20th-century community building: given its lack of factories, Washington attracted better-educated and assimilated Jews; similarly, the relatively small group of Italians was not split by regional identity. Among essays concerning recent immigrants are those that observe how people from Latin American nations have forged a "Latino" identity, while those from Africa remain divided by cultural and political barriers. Cary is executive director of the Humanities Council of Washington, D.C.; most contributors are scholars. Photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Insight Into Ethnic Washington D.C., May 27, 1998
This review is from: URBAN ODYSSEY (Hardcover)
One does not think of Washington D.C. as an ethnic city. Francine Curro Cary, Executive Director of the Humanities Council of Washington D.C. proves otherwise. The book is a series of essays of Washington ethnicity starting with the original Native Americans & working its way to the present. It is an interesting book, but hard to read at one sitting as it is more for a history scholar. My interest in Washington D.C. & its history kept me going. It will not help the tourist much as a guide to the major landmarks & monuments. It is more about the "other Washington." The one people actually live in. I would recommend only by someone deeply interested in the total history of Washington D.C., or a specialist in American Urban Ethnic Studies. It is not really for the general public.
