Learning Function Means Your Remote Is Never Obsolete

If you have a component that's not in the My Favorite Remote's database, you can use the learning feature to learn each of the commands you need from the component's own remote--so your remote is never obsolete.

Simply set the remotes about an inch apart pointed at each other (head to head), then when the My Favorite Remote says "READY", press and hold the button on the original remote for the command you want to teach. Release it when the R40 says "GOOD". Now your universal remote can grow with your home theater.

MacroPower Makes Controlling Your Home Theater Simple

Forget the hassle of powering each component in your home theater on and off. Wouldn't it be easier to simply press MAIN, then OFF and watch all of your devices turn off, one after another? That's what a macro does. You specify that when a particular button is pressed, a whole sequence of commands goes out, one at a time. Using URC's MacroPower, the My Favorite Remote can record up to 255 steps to a single button to make controlling your home theater as easy as possible.

OLED Screen for Clearer Images and Longer Battery Life

The My Favorite Remote's embedded 1.5" OLED screen is a first for universal remotes. This latest display technology offers brighter images and faster reaction to button presses, and gives the remote itself a lighter overall weight and a longer battery life.

Easy Menu Navigation

When you press the MAIN button, you can see the most frequently used devices in your home theater. Press either of the PAGE buttons to see any other available choices, or press any of the Screen buttons to select the device displayed on the screen.

Once you've selected the device you want to operate, the title bar displays the custom title you create for the device. Press either of the PAGE buttons to see other Screen buttons for your device. Any of the buttons can be custom labeled for convenience.

Three Types of Setup for Total Control

From your remote's screen you can select from three setup options. Choose Quick Setup to simply add a new device, or choose Advanced to add a device using codes, review current device codes, learn codes from another remote, copy functions from one device to another, create macros and favorite channels, edit and relocate buttons, and erase functions.

A System setup menu lets you adjust settings for the OLED screen, button backlighting, and low battery warning as well as view memory usage.

Simple Sound

URC's Simple Sound technology means the Volume and Mute buttons always control the sound regardless of what screen is displayed. The My Favorite Remote will use Copy and Paste to copy the commands from your TV or Audio system to the Volume and Mute buttons on all of your other devices.

On this you have to press a button to get it to light up.

(Can't wait for the URC-R30) Programming this remote with the on-device screen is a little tricky at first but is quite easy once you get used to it.
Ken
You would think that URC would just cannibalize the R50's programming and stick it in the R40.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Quick Summary:
===============
This remote is just as much if not more capable than similar remotes like the Logitech Harmony series. Basic programming is easy and requires no PC or internet connection. However, while it has greater advanced programming capabilities compared to many Harmony remotes, it comes at a price. The lack of software and some menu quirks means you kind of have to know what you're doing - or at least be willing to learn through trial and error. Excellent quality, excellent screen, I'd buy this remote over a Harmony.

Long Review:
=============
URC has been making great remotes for years. If you haven't heard of the brand, just know that they're well established and in my experience of owning 2 other remotes in addition to this one, they have been durable over the course of many years. I also own a Logitech Harmony 880 remote control and can compare the two directly.

The URC R40 is similar to Logitech Harmony remotes - it augments hard buttons by using an LCD screen which displays options next to the buttons. This allows many customized features for many different remotes. Like the Harmony, you can program it to control all your equipment, learn buttons that you can't find codes for, as well as make it perform smart tasks like turning all your equipment on, off, changing to the right channel when playing a DVD or a video game, etc.

The difference between the R40 and Harmony remotes is that the R40 doesn't use the computer to do any of this. So while you don't get a full-featured program to help you through the options, you are not dependant on USB cables, the logitech website, or any external source.

This remote has the potential to be better than anything else out there in the consumer learning remote market. Unfortunately, it has a very annoying problem. This problem has been known for at least a year since I read about it in reviews before purchasing. Surely, I thought, they've fixed it by now. Unfortunately, no, they haven't. The problem is this: when you learn a button from another remote, the next button gets erased. At first I thought they had fixed it since I didn't seem to have the problem. However, a few days in I noticed one of the buttons didn't work. I relearned it. Check the next button and sure enough it's not working. This went on and on until I had literally relearned all the buttons from the menu button down. What happens if I need to change one of the buttons in the future? I'll have to relearn the entire thing again? Ugh, what a pain in the butt. This highly annoying problem turns this 5 star remote into 2 stars. I'm still deciding whether to return it or not.

11/11/2012 - I am updating this review. Due to the bug I noted above, I go out of my way *not* to program this remote. I needed to finally add in my xbox to it's programming. I got it to work, but go figure now my main macro no longer works. I go in to edit it, and it's completely messed up. It lists the same command over and over and no amount of deleting and adding commands fixes it. The only way to fix it is to do a factory reset. This remote's firmware is buggy, and it makes this remote SUCK! Down to 1 star.

03/20/2013 - I called URC, and this is now a known problem with a batch of the remotes. If your remote has this problem, call URC and give them the serial number of the remote. They will give you an RMA and you can send in your remote for a new one.

This remote replaced my sentimental favorite but now obsolete MX500. I was so happy with the R40 until I noticed the same issue that others have pointed out - certain keys will lose their program. It seems to occur on the key adjacent to the one being programmed. So disappointed with URC as this bug has been reported for some time yet they have not fixed it. I will send this lemon back tomorrow and go with a Logitech remote most likely. URC, you are dead to me.

UPDATE Nov 30, 2012: Well, I liked the remote so much except for the one annoying problem that I thought to give URC a chance to fix it. So I call up their technical support with guarded optimism. After being placed on hold for 20 mins, I finally got a representative who seemed mildly annoyed that I was bothering him with this problem. I had to endure his arrogant comments about how I was "probably doing something wrong" before he had done a modicum of research. I referred him to reviews on Amazon and feedback on other A/V websites but of course he wasn't interested. The ironic part is that he was able to verify the bug using his remote. His solution was to take my phone number so a "senior" technician could call me back. It has been several days yet no call ever came. Unbelievable!!! How many times does a major product bug have to be reported to a manufacturer until they fix it or at least educate their technical support about it? Even though I tried numerous workarounds that did not work, I finally decided to send the remote back to Amazon who did a great job with the refund as always.

I decided to purchase the Logitech Harmony One and I am SO much more happy. The set-up was so much easier, and I love the interface. Take it from a long time URC user - Logitech has them beat. I would never purchase another URC product after this nightmare.
