This set is a very basic weight set. The weights are plastic and the bar has no weight on its own. It comes with 2 20#, 4 10# and 2 8# weights. When you start combining weights that is very limited. I am finding that being able to control increasing your weight by 2 - 5 pounds is much more realistic than going from say 20 pounds to 36 (adding the 8s). Ideally I would like to increase by 2-3 pounds per side not 8.
I suppose adding the right weight sizes to this makes it better; but you can buy a higher quality set with the needed weights for around the same price to making this set work. Definitely not for serious weight lifters or those of us in progressive training. I have a feeling adding too much weight to the bar will cause it to flex too much.

I have had this barbell set for about two months now and I love it. Let me start off by saying the shipping time was excellent, it was at my home within 3 days. Now onto the product; assembly is very simple being as though all you have to do is sort of hammer the bar together and put the weights on. The bar is very sturdy and can handle 100lbs. with no problems at all. If you are looking for a good barbell for home workouts look no further, you will have invested in the right product!!!

I'm an older guy who has been doing resistance training to stay toned. I've been using hand weights but decided I needed a barbell for bench presses. I shopped at Sports Authority and saw a similar set that was $25 more expensive, so I chose this one from Amazon.I'm a Prime member, and to my surprise, this item qualified for free 2-day shipping. I'm surprised because of its weight and would have thought it would be shipped by freight, not UPS. The package arrived torn open at one corner, but luckily everything was there. The assembly of the shaft itself is easy. Remove the protective red cap and insert the two ends together. You need to tap it a few times on a cement surface to seat the two together, and you're ready to go. It should be noted that once you assemble the handle you can't take it apart. This is by design, and absolutely the way it should be, but if you're not sure whether you're going to return this item, be sure you don't assemble it. Re-packaging it would be difficult because of its length, and it wouldn't fit in the original container. The weights have a rubberized coating which is perfect for me since I use and store these outside. (One advantage of Florida is you can do your workout on the patio all year long!) They fit easily onto the handle and the spring-loaded locks secure them. The handle has a grip area for holding the barbell as well as end caps for keeping moisture out of the handle. There are two issues I'd bring up for your attention before you choose this set. First, for my use, there aren't enough of a variety of weights. You get two 8 pound, four 10 pound and two 20 pound weights. That means if you start with, say, two of the 10 pound weights (20 pounds total), the next weight increment up would add 16 pounds (two 8 pound weights.) That almost doubles the original weight by increasing it to 36 pounds. I think it might have been a bit more flexible if there were some 5 pound weights included so the incremental weight increase could be a bit smaller. This might not make a difference for someone younger who is looking to build bulk, but for a 65-year old, that jump is just a bit more than I'd want. The second thing you should be aware of it that the spring-loaded clips used to hold the weights on the shaft allow a very slight wobble and rotation of the weight. I don't see this as an issue, but you might. There is no way they'd come off--the clips are very secure--but it's not the same as some barbells I've seen that use either a screw-on method or a collar to secure the weights. All-in-all, a good value for the money, but if you're looking to increase your weight slowly, just remember that the combination of weights supplied with this set may not be right for you.
