5.0 out of 5 stars Great help for planing a cross country trip
This is an excellent guide for those who want to sample what the United States has to offer. It is an excellent place to start especially if you are only going to be traveling through a lot of places. If you are going to someplace for a week this book will not be helpful and you should get the regional guides. Overall planning a cross country trip it gives lots of advice...

2.0 out of 5 stars Coast to Coast condensed
I was expecting a travel guide with more inclusive things to do rather than a condensed version of the things that most tourists do when they go to major cities. I ended up returning the book because I would rather pay $4 in shipping than almost $20 for a book I wasn't going to use.

This is an excellent guide for those who want to sample what the United States has to offer. It is an excellent place to start especially if you are only going to be traveling through a lot of places. If you are going to someplace for a week this book will not be helpful and you should get the regional guides. Overall planning a cross country trip it gives lots of advice on cities as well as small out of the way places that would be fun to see. Great addition to a travel book collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eyewitness is Awesome, October 20, 2008
By
This book, like all the other Eyewitness books, was awesome. It provided so much information about seeing the U.S. Whether looking for tourist attractions, general information, facts about each state, or hotel and restaurant suggestions, this book provides it all - with tons of pictures to boot.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Starting Place For Every Trip, July 30, 2005
My work has provided me with the opportunity to travel a good bit. I am the type of person who wants to get a working background for my destinations, both in terms of history and geographic layout. Because I work, I don't have a great deal of time to spend reading and studying different, often lengthy, travel guides before or during my trips.

Because these guides are concise, beautifully illustrated, relatively compact, and impeccably organized, I cannot recommend highly enough the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guides! The DK Eyewitness Travel Guide is THE guide I buy for every destination. Not only do I get a quick history and background of the destination, but I also will be provided with a visual guide to everything. The visual detail is really what sets the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides apart.

The street maps of common destination points are drawn in dimensional detail so you will visually recognize when you "get there." The regional maps are colorful and concise. And the drawings associated with attractions like museums allow the traveler who is short on time to quickly see the best of the museum within the time the traveler has to spend.

Each DK Eyewitness Travel Guide has a good summary section in the back with practical information about where to eat, where to sleep, what to do, and how to get around.

While I may supplement the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide with others for a more detailed travel guide, the other guide is only more to read, not more to see. Buy the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide first for any destination.

This is the second travel guide of DK which I bought. And I love it so much! I can turn over the pages for hours. There are so many beautiful pictures, I feel like I wanna travel to every single place covered in this book. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who wants to travel in the US.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tops for my money, March 6, 2011
This review is from: USA (Eyewitness Travel Guides) (Paperback)
Although intended primarily for foreign travelers vacationing in the U.S. And although I bought an older (2004) edition from a used book store, this is another 5 star DK production. And like the "Idiot's Guide" series of books, DK productions across the board, so far, have been of uniform high quality.

This traveler's guide surely must be said to be near the top of the travel guide heap. For it is richly illustrated with high quality glossy pictures of nearly every sight in the U.S. worthy of seeing; usefully organized; and packed full of only the most useful tips and information.

The text is broken down by regions (14 in all), which together make up the index. Before the regions are discussed, a short summary of U.S. history is provided. The each region follows the same format beginning with a map, followed by highlights of the cities and sights within the region; then comes an introduction to the region, which includes the geography, history, politics, and character of the people living there.

The intro is then followed by a detailed regional map that contains mileage charts (between cities and interesting sites within the region). The most interesting sites are numbered for easy reference. Major sites are then not just discussed, but even a 3-d rendering of the floor plan of buildings, important exhibits, costs and even parking restrictions, etc. are given. But the useful information does end there: Each site is dissected by security requirements, entertainment, shopping, where to park and eat, etc.

This all comes in a beautifully rendered, substantial feeling, 5.5 by 10 inch, sturdy (not with the usual flimsy page), easy to carry guide. There may be better travel guides out there, but for my money this one is tops. Five Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars the land i love!, August 1, 2011
By
This review is from: USA (Eyewitness Travel Guides) (Paperback)
found this guide really helpful. it gave me some great ideas on what other cities besides l.a., nyc, and las vegas i wanna go to. each region has something for everyone that suits their taste. new england, nyc & midatlantic, washington, d.c. and the capital region, the southeast, florida, the deep south, the great lakes, the great plains, texas, the rockies, the southwest, the pacific northwest, california, alaska, and hawaii. i skipped the pages on florida, california, chicago, philadelphia, and washington, d.c. since i've already read up on those areas from their other series. i love how the book list all the cities that are the greatest, charming, and fun places to visit. definitely recommendable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Always use Eyewitness books when we travel., February 12, 2011

This review is from: USA (Eyewitness Travel Guides) (Paperback)
We do a lot of traveling all around the world and we always use the Eyewitness books. We take them with us for reference. We read all about where we are going prior to the trip. The pictures and the information are fabulous.

We recently returned from Egypt and purchased this one as a gift for our tour guide in Egypt, Eman. She was wonderful. When the turmoil in Egypt is over we will mail it to her.
