4.0 out of 5 stars Got the hard drive, got the ram, got the game
The game is very fun, lots airplanes such as f-22a,mig 29,f-105D,f-4D,f-16,f-15c,a-10a,f-117,f-22a. Lots of missions and great graphics. The only thing that sould keep you from buying this game is the system requirements. I have a 600mhz,win98se,128rm and its works fine. So if you have the system its worth its weight and gold.

I spent hours playing USNF97 Viet Nam era missions, so I was eager to boot up Janes USAF. At first blush, this game looks terrific. With the appropriately sarcastic Col. "Scooter" Davis as your IP, you go through training at Nellis. In my case I flew most missions in the F-105 "Thud". Once through training, I started to fly some of the pre-set VN missions.

Here are the problems I see in this game that distract greatly from its overall rating.

1) Air launched missiles, Sparrow, Shrike and Sidewinder are 100% accurate. I had my setting at "Realistic". Reading of this era combat details how notorious the Sparrow was for just falling off the rails. If you launch, you will get a kill.

2) The worst problem, your wingman are ineffective. In flying a mission against the Paul Doumer bridge, I've taken 100% casualities most of the time, that is MigCap, Weasel and Strike aircraft all get shot down. Some of these are just crashing into the ground. I know it was rough and those men who flew the missions had a lot of guts, but in the game it is almost impossible to have a successful mission because the rest of team does not do their job.

3) The published patch is suppose to fix some of the A/I problems. However I have tried about half a dozen times and can't get it load.

4) For some reason the maps in the mission generator won't load. I have yet to figure this one out.

I really want to like this game. It is good for a couple of weeks, but does not seem to have the long term interest of EAW, Mig Alley or MSCS2-Pacific.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Try, July 9, 2002

This game had the potential to be outstanding. The avionics are lacking in realism. The F-15 radar looks like an F-16 display and the RWR is usless. Like most software companies, EA has produced a product that will only work on certain computers. Don't try this one on a computer loaded with Windows XP. It works for a day or two and then has to be reloaded.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sim, a few flaws, June 7, 2001

This is one of the best games I have ever played. The game really never gets boring with tons of premaid missions, the ability to make new ones (there is a quick mission editor for simple missions and a more advanced one to make more complicated missions) and a "Fly Now" command that randomly puts you in one of the eight planes. Mostly, the graphics are good except for explosions on the ground. Other bugs include the game choosing to close for no reason and the repeating of a broadcast on the radio until the end of the mission. That might be due to my computer though. I still hightly recommend this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed but fun, May 12, 2004

It's flawed but fun.

The fun:
Smart alec "Scooter" Davis as IP. Just like a lot of IP's in the Air Force.

All the choices of aircraft to fly.

All the different campaigns.

Flight models generally realistic; i.e., you can't haul an F-105 around the sky like an F-16.

Graphics are not bad for someone with an older computer and Windows 98.

Flaws:
Avionics! USAF F-4E's did not have a HUD, nor did F-105's. The early F-16C modelled also did not have onboard ECM. And the A-10 does not have radar of any kind - the Warthog modelled here has both A/A and A/G radar.

Also, the MiG-29 is quite incorrect. The cockpit looks like an American jet with some pseudo-Cyrillic lettering. The Fulcrum is also displayed with a dorsal airbrake. The real thing has clamshell airbrakes between the engine nozzles.

The Quick Missions are kind of neat and good practise. However, you cannot choose the loadout for your bird beyond A/A or A/G modes - what they give you is what you get. It's kind of funny to fly a MiG-29 in the A/G mode, though - they give you US Mk 83 bombs! Also, it would be nice to be able to practise inflight refuelling and to have "backseaters" on the F-15E and F-4E.

The Fly Now mode is absolute insanity, but sometimes that's a good thing.

Overall, pretty good, but you HAVE to have the manual. I'm glad I bought the initial release with the manual. I have the jewel case versions of Jane's F-15E and F/A-18 and have barely played them because of the cheap PDF manual on the disk - I don't fancy going through a ream of paper and several ink cartridges just to have the manual.

USAF is the bet Janes game excluding F-15 and Fighters Anthology! in USAF you get to fly the BEST USAF fighters such as the F-15, F-22, A-10, and F-117 (the stealth fighter). There are eight jets you can fly. The only problem you might have is the compexity. Such as the controls are a bit hard to memorise, bet you'll get used to it. In conclusion, I would like to say, GET THIS GAME NOW!!!

P.S. Get every other Janes game also!!

...after reinstalling usaf and setting compatibility to windows 2000 for XP the usaf seemed to work much better...I guess the ati 9700works fine with this game, but I figured this out without ati tech help!...for windows 95,98&ME the game runs fine and good on XP with compatibility set to Windows 2000...enjoyable simulator, especially mid-air refueling near hostile area...fill-up,lock-on, fire and flee!

Jane's USAF is by far the best combat flight simulator in the world.

The graphics and sounds are incredible (along with overall realism) are absulutely incredible.

Every single aspect of the program reflects realistically the United States Air Force and it's top fighter aircraft.
