Doesn't work well with SATA drives,

This review is from: USB 2.0 to SATA IDE (2.5/3.5/5.25") Adapter w/OTB NEW (Electronics)
I was swayed by all the five star reviews and went ahead and bought one of these but my experience with it was extremely disappointing.
Whereas all the other reviewers used it for IDE drives i bought mine for use with an SATA drive and the device failed at the job miserably. Firstly, the adapter provided does not provide sufficent power to the SATA drive! When the power connector is connected the drives (i tried it with about 3 SATA and 1 IDE) they all made a clicking (very worrysome) noise but would never get going. Fortunately i have another similar product which I use for an IDE drive. Using this adapter the drives would spin and get going without problem, however that was only the first problem I would encounter :( After getting the SATA drives powered and going I connected the USB cable to the computer. Nothing. After about 15mins of retrying the same configuration over and over I somehow got the windows (XP) to detect the drive. "Whew!", I thought, "problem solved".Wrong!! After a few minutes the drive just disappeared from My Computer. So again another 15 minutes of configuration changes, I got the drive to work used it for a bit. By then it was late and time for sleep. After a long day today of work, I come home, power up my PC, NO USB DRIVE. I start playing around with the configuration again, over an hour this time, but no luck, I would just get a "USB Mass Storage Device" detected but a hard drive would never show in my computer. I've so far given up. That brings me to my frustration I'm feeling now buying this device, shipping it all the way here and having to spend loads of time playing around with it. In closing, don't buy this product if you plan to use it for SATA drives. To make sure the device was functioning i tried it with my IDE drives numerous times and every time it worked without problem. Another point to note is that the device had an IDE adapter that connects directly to IDE drives but for SATA connectivity a SATA cable is needed from this adapter to the hard drive. A similar device that connects directly to the SATA drive like in the case of IDE drives just might function better. I'm about to search for one such now.

An all in one adapter. This works great for a dead laptop that I need to pull data off the hard drive.

Great product if you want to use it with IDE driver, just plug the power and the cables and you are set to go. But don't buy it if you want to use with a SATA drive, have tried for several hours to get it to work, but cannot get the HD to get recognized.

Very handy device if you have multiple computers and external hard drives. This can enable you to trouble shoot, move files or install software to any hard drive that I have come across so far. You dont have to lug around desktops if you just need to tweak its hard drive on another computer.
My only complaint is that the power cord is cheap and the outer insulation is pulling back exposing the smaller wires inside (not a danger, just unsightly)

used 1 time. the connector was bent upon arrival and had to be bent back in to shape to properly connect to the hard drive pins. I would say the cord is pore. the power supply would not power up the 2nd time i went to use the adapter. (still on the first day) I would not recommend buying this particular adapter.

I already had one of these but needed two so I could plug in two notebook laptop HDs and move one's WinXP Pro Installation to the other as it was just under 5GB of size and the newer HD was 40GB which would work better on my ThinkPad. I just needed one more but the price and quality was so good that I ordered two so now I have three, two to use again if I have the same situation, also one to continue using for just a single HD USB connection to any computer I have set up in my Computer Command Center which can be any where from 1 to 20 computers at a time going. I also now have a spare if needed.
They are so easy to use and also all three have the OTB, One Touch Backup, thing going for them if so needed.

A Nice Gadget To Have When You Transfer Files Off Of Your Hard Drive,

I found that this is a very useful piece of equipment to have on hand to transfer your files off of your old hard drives. You can hook up an old EIDE, SATA and as well as a EIDE 2 1/2" notebook hard drive. It also works with SATA notebook hard drives and desktop optical drives whether it'll be EIDE or SATA connected to your USB 2 port. It's only ideal on USB 2,the original USB is much too slow for file copying or transfer. You can also use it to set up a spare hard drive as your external storage. For EIDE drives, be sure to set the jumper to the master position before hooking up.
Occasionally, your computer may not recognize the drive connected to this device when connecting to your computer. Under that condition, the best option would be to unplug from the USB port and pulled the power plug. Next, power up the drive again then waiting until the drive spins up fully and then connect the USB plug to your computer. If after you repeat this several times and it still unable to recognize the drive, it is possible that the adapter and drive aren't compatible. This has happened to me with the old 100 MB Zip drive. No matter how many times I tried, it still doesn't work. Yet the drive is functional when I hooked it up to my computer's IDE port.

This product works great. The best part about it is that it has the power cord so you can access an internal hard drive like it was an external one. Good purchase. You should buy it.

This a great thing for people who are upgrading or changing different systems around. I have had it for over a year, used on CD/DVD drives large 3 1/2" & 2.5 drives. Just using it once will pay for it. Far easier to use than a case.

I have not been able to get either one of two of these units to work at all, either with IDE, ATA or SATA...period. My computer simply does not recognize the drives and then SITS there forever TRYING to recognize the drives. I have tried with three different IDE/ATA drives, two different ATA CD-ROM drives and have not been able to get them to work, at all.
