This is very compact and nice looking on the desk.

The USB 2.0 connections work OK, and the Digital Video connection works for an external monitor used as a desktop extension, provided you don't try to watch a movie.

No issue with installation of drivers or software.

I've had the port replicator for all of a day, and I'm happy with it so far. I use a Thinkpad T400 for work and just purchased an Ideapad Z570 for home use, since I've found the Lenovos to be sturdy (they get a *lot* of abuse at work). I had the folks at Lenovo confirm that it would work with both (the Ideapads don't have a docking station that you can use - it's these port replicators or nothing). It was pretty simple to set up, once I got the setup going with the CD it configured everything on both laptops satisfactorily. It did take me a little messing around to try to figure out how I like to have the monitors set up - I needed to change the computer settings so that the big monitor was the primary monitor. There's a little delay on startup in switching over to the big monitor, but certainly manageable, and I don't have to reconfigure each time I set up or disconnect and then work from the laptop.

I love that I can have my internet directly hooked up as well (that is an added bonus - I'd planned to use wireless otherwise). I bought it mainly to allow me to hook up the monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and didn't pay attention to that connection - so that's an added bonus for me!

Also hooked up: external keyboard, mouse & printer through an external USB hub (testing this out - seems to work just fine). This allows me to not consume all USB ports for the "must haves" and lets me keep the 2 in front free for temporary add-ons such as a bamboo wacom tablet.

It's passed the netflix test too = satisfactory display and sound. I have a 24" Acer monitor hooked up. It came with the adapter I needed to hook up the monitor.

My technical skill level: I can do simple problem solving with the help of the internet, I can install / uninstall programs and reboot - beyond that I'm very reliant on how user-friendly the setup is. Minor-problem solving skills.

I would buy again.

Our non-profit organization recently purchased around 20 Lenovo T-430 Ideapads for our staff members. We figured it would be wise to buy these USB Port Replicators as our staff members tend to go off-site with the need of their laptop. After purchasing one of these replicators, I was excited about how easy the installation process was. It was essentially plugging a few cords in, instalilng a driver and rebooting the computer.

To my satisfaction, the external keyboard worked, the mouse was responsive, the LCD monitor it was hooked up showed a good quality image, and even the ethernet connection was a success. Everything worked! Or so I thought...

As soon as I fired up Internet Explorer 10, I received a looping 'unexpected crash' error. No matter how many times I closed out and back in, I wasn't able to use IE10.

Now, I could use another browser and possibly fix the issue, however, this cannot be done as our company website must use an IE browser. Lame, I know. But it is the truth. As an I.T. Coordinator, it is my job to troubleshoot and resolve these issues. It took me hours but after testing this replicator on more than one Lenovo laptop I have found the issue to be driver related.

Essentially, this driver crashes IE10 because it changes some values within the registry that causes IE10 to crash when defaulted to GPU rendering rather than Software rendering. This is an option you can change in your Internet Option settings in the Advanced tab. Now, I would be fine with this fix, only that I would have to manually change this value any time a brand new user logs in to the laptop for the first time. I refuse to do that as this is a time waster.

Finally, I called Lenovo and told them my story.

I had troubles with this port replicator from the start. I have a Lenovo Ideapad and this was the port replicator recommended since the Ideapad line has no docking station. The driver software didn't install completely and failed causing the Windows blue screen of death. I tried to uninstall the fragment that installed through the control panel several times and the incompletely installed software would not uninstall because it never fully installed. I guess this is a known issue to Display Link because they had an uninstall tool available on their website to take care of the problem. So I decided to just use the device as a USB hub and a speaker output. For the three weeks I owned it, every time I booted up my laptop it wanted to install that awful software. In regular usage it caused my mouse to lag, the sound from my laptop to crackle, and it randomly disconnected at least once a day. I could only restart the device by rebooting my laptop. Perhaps I had a defective unit. I'll never know because I'm not replacing this unit with another one. Instead I'm using a $30 powered USB hub.

Purchased this USB hub to use with my Lenovo X1 laptop since it does not have a true dock capability. I actually have two of these, one for home and one for work. Works well with a multitude of periphials such as my printer, scanner, external hard drive and external floppy drive all hooked up at the same time. One word of caution, make sure you load the most current drivers or your screen, atleast in my application, will change resolution when hooked up. After making sure the most current display link driver was installed everything worked fine. Have not used it with an external monitor, but that will be next. I am running Windows 7 Professional on the X1.
