Format: Paperback
As with his first book on the U.S. Coastguard, Mr. Ostrom demonstrated again in this book his ability for thorough research, his good sense of historical ballance and perspective, and his easy-paced narrative. I enjoyed reading the book very much and have recommended it to all of my friends. Anyone who is interested in a good history book will do well picking up this book. Format: Paperback
Written by history, anthropology, and geography teacher Thomas P. Ostrom, who served in the USCGR from 1961-69, The USCG on the Great Lakes: A History chronicles the existence and duties of the United States Coast Guard on the Great Lakes from its inception in the late 1700's to the present day. From life-saving duties to environmental protection, law enforcement, port security, and much more, the USCG's contributions to national defense throughout the centuries are efficiently summarized, with an extensive bibliography for further reference. A handful of black-and-white photographs and an index round out this highly accessible and thoroughly engaging contribution to American military and nautical history shelves.

The book is limited in depth and shallow in content. The Author would have the reader believing that the Epicenter of the Great Lakes and the people in the USCG upon the Inland Seas are located at Duluth MN, Note the fact that this is where he is from and where he spent limited time in the USCGR.
I was disappointed with his limited research and the generalized manor which it was delivered.
I spent 4 years in the USCG as a QM-1 on the Great Lakes.

Probably the best overview of the subject I have ever read. Ostrom hasn't a slow moment in the entire book. Well documented. Well illustrated. Ostrom gives a rare insider's look at Coast Guard history. The book gives both fundamental overviews of Coast Guard wartime missions and all the important specific engagements the Coast Guard undertook. Highly recommended to any and all World War two afficinadoes.
