I just recently received the Ultimate Survival Technologies 30-Day Lantern so I haven't been able to give it any long-term tests or usage but I like what I see so far. I bought some relatives the popular Ray-O-Vac Sportsman Lantern (SE3DLN) for Christmas because it had good reviews and frankly costs less. I decided to try the UST brand because of the potential 30-day length of use. I like the solid build, it doesn't seem cheap. It is impact & weather resistant. This unit seems to be built better than the Sportsman model. It weighs a little more than the Sportsman perhaps by less than half a pound (weighs 1.9 lbs with batteries). It is also close to a couple inches taller. For those not familiar with these it is similar to the size of a 20 oz bottle of Gatorade or soda but just a little wider. Very simple to use and batteries are a cinch to put in. Like the Sportsman, it has a green flashing finder light that blinks every 5 seconds when turned off. This is not a bright or bothersome flash but is meant to help locate in the dark. I also like how this lantern has 3 brightness modes instead of 2 with high, medium and low plus a 4th SOS flashing mode. It is also brighter than most comparable lanterns in high mode at 300 lumens. The three D batteries are expected to last up to 30 days in low mode (29 lumens), 3.5 days in medium (150 lumens) and 32 hours in high. This lantern lights up a room very nicely. Even in medium at 150 lumens it is quite bright. Low mode could often be sufficient during an extended power outage but it's fainter more like a real strong night light. This lantern has a nice handle on top for hanging and can also be used upside down as a downlight. You can spend more or less depending on what you're looking for but this is a choice I would highly recommend.Read more ›

Read and believe the other reviews about the quality and versatility of this product. I'm just here to say that the first thing I did, just for fun, was to test the "30 day" claim. With a fresh set of batteries, and even turning it up to medium or high from time to time in order to demonstrate to friends, this thing ran continuously for 33 days. It is the real deal!

I purchased several of these to test for a high rise NYC apt. building's use after Hurricane Sandy and in preparation for the next blackout. We were looking for something inexpensive, easy and reliable for hallway and stairwell emergency lighting that would last for more than a day or two. The results of our tests were quite remarkable. On three separate occasions/tests, the lanterns ran for over 11 days straight (24/7) on the HIGH setting, which is advertised as lasting for less than 2 days on that setting. The lanterns set for medium ran for 17 days before exhausting the batteries, and the ones set on low are still running over 30 days later. You simply cannot beat these for cost and function. They are well constructed, lightweight and perfect for intended use. The high setting is really HIGH, and the lower settings are perfectly adequate for emergency lighting. The only downside is how easy it is for someone to walk away with them!

If you are looking for a bright battery sipping latnern and are comparing to the Coleman Dual LED Latern (herein CDL) to the Ultimate Survival Technolgies 30-Day Lantern, (herein UST), I really recommend the UST. They are both in the low $30 to mid $30 so the price is not the real difference. The only advantage that the CDL has over the UST is the continuous variable brighness control. If you consider that the CDL is 390 lumens to the UST's 300, you are talking about 33% brighter in favor of the CDL, which is at the in the just enough for the human to notice. Now consider this, which I find to be the biggest advantage of the UST, it only requires 3 "D" batteries to deliver on the 30-Day claim. The CDL requires 8 "D" batteries. So if over the use of the lantern (unless seldom used (I use our laterns about twice a month since I am a leader in two Boy Scout Troops so I go camping about twice a month), it would acutally be cheaper to buy two UTSes when taking into account the cost of the batteries (unless you get rechargeables) where I can use 6 batteries in two lanterns (UST) vs. 8 batteries in one lantern (CDL) . Another feature of the Black/Glo vs. the colored ones, this glows in the dark (ok, not foreever) and doesn't have the flahing LED locator element, so no extra drain on the batteries. If you really want super bright there is a 508 lumen UTS 60-Day latern, but it will set you back around $70 and it takes 6 "D" batteries. I still think two UTS 30-day is a better value. Another thing about the UTS (the 30-day) is it is compact and except for the weight of the batteries (but still lighter than the 6 and 8 cell lanterns) it is easy to get into your pack. And since they are weatherproof (not waterproof), you could hang it on your pack. The UST also feels a bit more rugged.

One downside to both lanterns is the lack of included reflector. This is a problem if you want to hold either of them up to get a "lay of the land" at night as part of it shines in your eyes.

This lantern is very versatile.
It has 5 different lighting modes
high
med
low
sos
globe removed
With the globe removed it lights like a bright candle.
The high setting fills the room with light.
The low setting is supposed to last 30 days, haven't tested that yet but the light is sufficient.
Once batteries are installed a blinking led locator allows you to find the lantern in low light settings.
An led scale on the lantern indicates high, medium and low settings, that you can see from a distance.
It is sturdy and feels well made
The handle on top folds down around the lantern for storage . There is also a hook on the bottom for hanging the lantern upside down, giving the user even more options.
This lantern is well made and versatile, good for emergencies and car camping. It is not a backpacker, with 3D batteries it is not lightweight. I bought this for emergency lighting. I really did not care for the gas lanterns and was not impressed with most of the led lanterns available. This lantern has so many options that including it in your storm and emergency prep is a no brainier
