This UTG Weaver scope mount is machined out of a solid block of aluminum. It looks and feels sturdy. You install it by first replacing the bolt lock cover plate of your Mini-14 with the replacement plate provided, which has a threaded screw hole machined into it. Replacing this cover plate is simple. (Refer to your Mini-14 owner's manual for the exact disassembly procedure and safety precautions.) Generally, this is what you do: (1) Verify that the chamber is empty; remove the magazine. (2) Cock the Mini-14 by pulling the slide all the way to the back and release. (3) Engage the safety. (4) With a Philips screwdriver, pop the trigger guard latch and remove the trigger assembly (this can be done only with the Mini-14 cocked and the safety on). (4) Lift the barrel/receiver assembly from the stock. (5) With a slot screwdriver, dislodge the original cover plate by pushing it downward gently, taking care not to disturb the bolt locking mechanism. (6) Slide the replacement plate into the slot. (7) Re-assemble the Mini-14 in the reverse order. You are now ready to install the scope mount. Installing the mount is a simple process: Position and tighten the thumbscrew into the replacement plate. Verify that the tension pin sits on top of the Mini's bolt lock plunger. Tighten the two top screws with the larger of the two Allen wrenches provided, making sure that the mount is level (See Note below), and tighten the two side screws with the smaller Allen wrench. The mount is now ready for your scope. Two Weaver rings are provided in case you need them. I installed my Leapers red/green dot scope on the mount. It worked well. It provides my scope with a solid platform. I am pleased with the product.

Note: I leveled my Mini by first securing it in a gun-rest.

I attached a small'ish, 7.5 inch total length, 4 power tactical scope. With the scope attached as far back as possible on the rail, and with the scope secured as far back as poss within the rings themselves, I still have about 5-6 inches of "relief" between the rear of the scope and my eyeball. It's too far. Most scopes need to be around 3 inches and with a smaller scope like this one, that is not possible with this mount.

Unless you are using a scope that can project at least 5 inches behind the back of the rail (that would, by my math, mean a scope that is at least 11.5 inches in total length and most scopes are around 12 inches), the eye relief may be an issue. My 4 power scope is a total of 7.5 inches and projects 2.75 inches off the back of the rail, and so the back of the scope ends up being 5 inches from my eye and it's too far away.

What cheezes me is that, far as I can tell, this was totally avoidable. The front part of the rail extends pretty far forward. Why did they not reverse that? If they had reversed that, it would probably work for all optics because that would add 2+ inches.

Also - I have a collapsible, ATI stock, so I can get my face much closer than a standard Mini 14 stock and even collapsed all the way, still doesn't quite work.

Too bad because other than that, it seems like a nice mount. It's pretty heavy, seems secure and some design elements are clever. I noted a reviewer complaining about being unable to get the mount to remain level and, I can't see how he's having that problem so I think that's operator error. This has several "set" screws that should keep it totally level, as in, it should be impossible for it to go out of level. I've done a bit of gun work and am pretty mechanically minded so I think my opinion on that is pretty fair.

I will be putting a larger scope on it here and I am sure it will be fine but I didn't want to have to do that.

I own a 1997 GB ruger mini-14 which i just purchased. It was a police trade-in. It does not have the ruger scope mounts like the new ones have. The bolt locking plate was loose when i installed it and this initially had me concerned. After i attached the mount to it and tightend the elevation screws it was extremely sturdy. Once you have it lined up as you want it, make sure to use lock tite to ensure the screws stay in place. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Installing this mount was very easy. I read other reviews and got some good tips, that helped me understand what to expect. I took my time and it turned out very good. As another reviewer wrote , (don't forget the locktite). Arrived before deadline. (Jake)

I ordered this product and it got here in record time. I was pleased with the way it went on and needed only a few hand tools. Its built solid. The scope rings that come with are nice as well. Its just the right height for your optics, no matter what you choose.. Cant wait to shoot with it..

Mounting a scope or dot sight on earlier model Mini 14s has always been problematic, so it was with some trepidation that I ordered this scope mount. After removing the stock bolt lock cover, I was a little peeved at the loose fit of the plate that fits in the receiver channel, that has the threaded hole that is designed to attach the mount to the rifle`s receiver. I was worried about the side to side play of this mounting plate, and felt certain that the whole assembly would wobble and move when the rifle was fired. After attaching the mount and my red dot scope, I headed to the range to dial in the sight. After about 100 rounds, I was pleased to see that the sight did not budge, and the sight remained dead on target. The small Allen screws that level the mount have a pair of set screws placed at a 90 degree angle that very effectively lock the leveling screws into position, and kept the level adjustment perfect, and prevented loosening of the screws. The large thumb wheel screw that holds the mount to the receiver mounting plate was the only problem I had with this product. it did have a tendency to loosen after 30-40 rounds, and had to be tightened really hard to prevent loosening. A large slot is cut into this screw, so it can be firmly tightened with a broad bladed screw driver. I had to really twist this screw hard with the driver, and I was a little scared that I would strip the screw. Be careful to all who buy this mount! All in all I am very pleased with this mount and would recommend it to all with confidence. It is the first scope mount that has actually worked on my particular rifle, and I have tried more than a few!
