Book Description

he "Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop: Applications and Administration" covers the Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) release, focusing on applications and administrative tools. The emphasis here is on what users will face when using Ubuntu, covering topics like installation, applications, software management, the Ubuntu desktops (Unity and KDE), shell commands, network connections, and system administration tasks. Ubuntu 12.04 introduces several new features, as well as numerous smaller modifications. It is a long-term support release. The Ubuntu desktop with the Unity interface is examined in detail. Unity uses a Launcher and a Dash (dashboard) to manage access to applications and devices. It is also now based on GNOME 3, with several new desktop configuration tools and the System Settings dialog. In addition, changes to the messaging, user switcher, and desktop menus, as well as the Nautilus file manager, are covered. The Kubuntu desktop, which uses KDE, provides a very different interface using plasma containers to support the panel, menu, desktop, configuration tools, and plasmoid applets. Changes include enhancements of the Unity interface with launcher and dash, refinements to the Ubuntu Software Center, Ubuntu One setup and configuration, the new Gwibber social networking interface, and LibreOffice. Rhythmbox is the default music player and Thunderbird is the default mail client. Advanced components are also examined such as the GRUB 2 boot loader, PulseAudio sound configuration, and Disk Utility (Udisks) for storage device configuration and information (SMART).
The ebook version features color illustrations and hyper-linked overview, contents, index, chapters, sections, figures, tables, and Web sites.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to get up-to-speed December 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My first experience in learning Ubuntu was The Ubuntu Desktop Beginner's Guide (Computer Beginner's Guides) Like the Moeller book, this one also has great screenshots to illustrate it, but they're easier to read with the book displayed on my laptop --the screenshots would be indecipherable on an e-reader. This volume would give me all that I needed to make the most of 12.04. It even gives options that, hopefully, you will never have to resort to. From installation, to the unthinkable, this book will give you what you need... including links to the many, many sites involved in customizing YOUR desktop.

3.0 out of 5 stars Necessary for New Ubunti Users May 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
If you are new to the Ubunti O/S this is a necessary item. You should read it through to give you a feel and understanding of how things work. it will answer many basic questions. It will be helpful when you are setting up your first unit. Ubunti is based n the Linux kernel (a unix O/S) and is well supported by the Ubunti community. It is available both as an e-book and hard copy. The former is good unless there are serious problems ( i.e. you just installed/added something and it did not go as planned), then the latter is needed. It goes well with the basic rule in the unix community Read The Fine Manual. You will be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's a very good purchase November 26, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm not too clear on Ubuntu but with another book I have on Ubuntu for non-geeks, I'm learning slowly. Without very much support out there, it's a very good purchase
