Good, but out-of-date,

They updated the test for Hardy (8.04) after this book came out, so make sure you get the new curriculum from [...] so you can know what parts of the book to ignore and what parts you need to supplement (its not too much). There are also some errors. It is nevertheless a great resource and helped me pass the test. I recommend it to anyone wanting a deeper knowledge of Linux/Ubuntu, as well as those studying for the UCP exam.

I bought this book after seeing it a store. Unfortunately I didn't buy it then and until I made up my mind it was gone. So I had to order it here.
The structure and the content of the book is good and should be enough material (together with the curriculum) to pass the test. The CD however is nothing but a feeble joke. I'm already using a PC with Ubuntu installed and I thought the mock exam included in the CD would run on Ubuntu (or any Linux distro) but it's all Windows :-( Hello? Do all the books about WinXP, Vista, Win7 come with *nix binaries on the CDs? Really disappointed with the publisher... (McGraw Hill)

I found this book to be effective in helping me prepare for both LPIC-1 tests, however, it has a few very noticeable flaws that may cause someone less experienced with Linux to get less ROI. I had used various Linux distros at home and work for ~10 years before finally deciding to go ahead and get certified. First of all, the software is simply awful. It is Windows only and has many, many wrong answers. I found a number of questions where the testing software marked me wrong while reporting the correct answer as NOTHING, just a blank space. The book itself is really pretty decent but has some very obvious mistakes that speak to a sub-par editing process. There are a number of instances of pure copy/paste with words changed between paragraphs. More alarming than this though is the number on instances where words were NOT changed. Mr. Jang is a talented author and I do feel this book was rushed to market to coincide with the updated(04/01/09) LPIC objectives. Even at three stars I would still recommend buying this book as a study guide, just don't make it your only one.

Fast sent and friendly reply on questions. Book was somewhat damaged when received, but that's probably due to transport.

The book is well written, even though written back in the 7.04 days, still addressed the fundamentals for the LPI 199 Exam. As reading and testing extras go, it is, well good, not tedious reading. There is an tutorial disk autorun, so the Linux exam book was designed to be used on a Windows machine. A little bit of irony, not lost on some of us.
Is it worth it, for sure, there are so many incomprehensible books out there to guide us through the LPIC/Ubuntu jungle, and this is a good one, buy it. |
