Without a doubt the most comprehensive and useful book on Linux I have seen. The printing is a little light and small. But to get the amount of information that's in there in a book that you are able to pick up the small is necessary, but it could be a little darker. It is not "Ubuntu 8.10 for Dummies" but if you have a problem or question, the answer is probably in there.

I bought this book used for a good price to learn Ubuntu. It covers an older version of the OS but it's thick and contains all you'd ever want to know about how this Linux distro technically works and not much changes from version to version. Nothing like just installing the latest Ubuntu on an old laptop and going with the learning curve, though. I eventually moved on to Linux PCLinuxOS instead of Ubuntu but I still refer to this book when trying to figure out a problem since most Linux versions work along the same line.

It was great to finally get this book. It would have been better had it still been fully usable. By the time I received Ubuntu 9.10 was about to be released.

I was given an Ubuntu CD by a friend. I tried it in my computer, afraid it would spoil something. I used it out of the CD a couple of times. I liked it and decided to install together with Windows. I got more into Ubuntu. Following links found the free Ubuntupocketguide and studied it. Decided I needed something more in depth. I got this book. To tell the truth I have not had time to read it; (well, just a few pages). The point is my Ubuntu stopped having sound. It was very bothersome. I went to the section on the book about sound; in about 10 minutes I found the way to make my sound work again! That is very encouraging! (I am not a genious or PC guru). The book got home with a slight dent on one corner! I do not care about it, I want it to learn stuff; not to display it on a shelf! The price at Amazon.com was very good!
