Good beginning,

This review is from: Ubuntu Linux For Dummies (Paperback)
This provides a great beginning overview to Ubuntu Linux and had some very interesting history about it. Switching from Microsoft to Linux, this book carefully explained the similarities and differences. Because Ubuntu is very intuitive, some of the book's sections were simplistic, but thorough in the explanation. Overall, a very good starting point in learning the new OS.

Good book. Read on...,
By Alex Vox (Winnetka, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ubuntu Linux For Dummies (Paperback)
I have long shelve of books on linux and unix. This is one decent book on ubuntu but it is what the title says: it is book for a very beginner and in this role it is very credible reading. You should not expect from it any "advanced" subjects, but it walks you trough first time ubuntu experience. It outlines and crisply describes basic things for first time users. It is not up to current version, but it is still very reliable.
If you are looking for more than merely basic guide see Ubuntu, Kubuntu 8.04 and Linux Training Library 2DVDs+CD as it comes with great PDF library on CD. If you never touched Linux before you probably need the Linux/Unix course see Linux and UNIX for a beginner complete training suite, 4DVDs + 2CDs ed.2008

This was even better than I expected. Not only is the book ease to understand but it comes with a free verson of the programs it describes. This was just great.

The book is outdated. The latest version of Ubuntu (8) can not be learned using this book. I decided to switch to the version included with the book to prevent a total loss, but the CD files were corrupt and would not load. Book is useless. CD doesn't work. Save your money and don't buy.

The book is for an outdated verison of Ubuntu. This book is for V6 and current version is V7. Still, much is the same.

Not as good as I had hoped,

I have maybe ten "For Dummies" books and I like the series. However I had been having trouble setting up a dual boot configuration and hoped this book might help with that. Ooops! Nope! All I got were the instructions "if everything went perfectly", which, of course, it did not. There was nothing to help when it didn't work which started right off as I couldn't even get the disk to boot live.
This "For Dummies" book left me very dissapointed.

This is a little light. The on-line Ubuntu community provides a much more comprehensive and helpful resource.

My only complaint is that I am using an IMAC and nowhere on the front cover of the book or any where else could I find any thing that said the book was for "Ubuntu Linux" for PCs. I was hoping to use the enclosed software CD, but alas, it wouldn't run on my IMAC. However, probably 95% of the information is also good for IMAC users so I didn't loose every thing when I bought the book. It has helped me out of several tight spots.

Simple but lacking in depth,
By Bronfman (Halifax, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ubuntu Linux For Dummies (Paperback)
Perhaps I should have taken the title a little more seriously, especially the "For Dummies" part. This book certainly starts at the beginning and does a fairly good job of it, but my only complaint is that most people moving into Ubuntu are not total beginners at computers. I was expecting a little more depth, but perhaps unfairly so, given the Dummies series.

I have finally made the definite decision to convert COMPLETELY to Linux and have chosen Ubuntu to be my pardner an home and at work. This book along with others have made me decide to go complete and all at one time, no more playing with partitions and that dual crap. This book, I highly recommend as it makes your life in Ubuntu not only easy but FUN and easy.
