Good, but it's too basic,
This review is from: Ubuntu Linux Secrets (Paperback)
This is basically a beginners approach towards the Ubuntu GNU/Linux. Although I'm a tech-savy I think I learned something from it, nonetheless. The first three parts are pretty basic, only PART4: Using the Ubuntu Server and PART5: Programming in Ubuntu are worth reading for someone with some knowledge of how the OS works and is interested in those areas. I would recommend it to those new to Ubuntu and GNU/Linux in general, you'll definitely learn some "secrets" of how to use Ubuntu from it.

Good introductory book for those new to Linux Software Development,

This review is from: Ubuntu Linux Secrets (Paperback)
Ubuntu Linux Secrets covers the huge range of what you can do with Ubuntu - but at the cost of detail. It is ideally suited as an introductory book for someone with an interest and/or background in Information Technology, but with little or no experience in Linux. About two thirds of the book is dedicated to how to install, use and maintain a Ubuntu desktop distribution for common computing applications, with the balance of the book dedicated to using Ubuntu as a server and how to install and use some of the more common programming languages. The book concentrates on the standard Ubuntu distribution, with derivatives that may better suit some new to Linux personal computing given a brief half page. Many useful 'Secret' tips spread throughout the book will assist even experienced Ubuntu users to get more out of Ubuntu. There is a reasonably comprehensive 37 page index supporting this 800 page book, but surprisingly for a book that whets your appetite for so many activities, no references.I can recommend this book to anyone that is new to Linux and wants to make the most of their Ubuntu installation. There is a wealth of information that will assist anyone wishing to use Ubuntu for entertainment and productivity, plus chapters on setting up database, DNS, email, samba/print and web servers plus some useful chapters on how to get started with software development using shell scripting, PERL, Python, C, Java, Ruby and PHP.

This book is informative and easy to read. I haven't read much of it yet. I still think that this book is a good one for someone that is new to Ubuntu.

I have several other books that are not nearly as wordy and cover these topics way better. Keep looking.
