This book is probably the most helpful book on Ubuntu I have read. It feature's up-to-date information, and most of all it's also available FREE on pdf format online. 5.0 out of 5 stars excellent coverage of the Ubuntu essentials for the power Windows user, April 11, 2009
This review is from: Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference (Paperback)
What I most like about this book is that there is zero fluff from page 1 until the end of this book. And although I have been using Ubuntu since 7.04, I still learned from this book. I think the target audience for this book is the experienced Windows power user/ administrator who wants to try Linux as that is the user that will find something useful on just about every page. I did. However, the average Windows user may better benefit from the Official Ubuntu book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference, April 12, 2009

Anyone thinking about writing an introductory book on any subject should take a look at this book. It's informative, concise and friendly. Each chapter prepares you for the next. The author never assumes you know too much, but doesn't write "down" either. I've only worked my way through part of the book, but I can tell it will take me from newbie to competent Ubuntu user...eventually. His notes and tips inserted within the text are welcome tidbits. The book's size and layout are user-friendly, too. It's everything a pocket guide should be.

For anyone brave enough as i was to leave Windows behind for Good and move on to an operating system that is smart, fast and above all FUN, such as Ubuntu, this book is a must-have companion. It is an easy read but not in a "dumbing-down" way. I received it mere days before my new desktop system arrived so, i was able to read it quite easily from cover-to-cover ahead of set-up and i keep it at arms length for the few bumps in the road that can occur when dealing with a new-to-you OS.

Hopefully this book will help in the promotion of Ubuntu as a worthy replacement and competitor to both Windows and MAC. So far, i have been happy!

This book where as not a linux super code book is just the thing for any casual user of a computer who would like to try ubuntu. It has quite a bit of useful tips that would be frustrating to figure out on your own that make the user experience much more enjoyable. I would recommend this book to just about anyone (as long as I liked them).

Very Good

A must read for anyone wanting to start out in Linux. Best book for about $10 bucks that I have bought. Read it BEFORE putting the disk in your machine. It will make life easier.
