The Quattrocento was a period of extraordinary importance in the history of the civilization of Florence. Having survived the terrible Black Death of 1348, in the 15th century Florence experienced a new social and political reality that fostered rapid progress. The tangible evidence of the beginning of this new period of peace and economic prosperity was the growing number of works of art commissioned by public organizations.
