Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-7-- As updated editions, these books are full of current facts, statistics, case histories, and treatment options. However, the writing is somewhat choppy, mostly due to the fictionalized sequences in the text. The frightening facts are too important to be overshadowed by these somewhat stilted tales, and they detract from the books' potential punch. Still, Hyde presents complete information in an approachable fashion on topics in great demand for assignments. In Drugs , readers are confronted by the odd statement that there seems to be less drug use these days. Apparently Hyde is referring to marijuana use, but with the increasing availability of street drugs such as crack, the statement is not clear. There is, however, information on newer drugs such as PCP, crank, ice, and steroids. Hyde's advice to fight drug use by making posters is somewhat unrealistic, but she provides Covenant House's 800 number, whose operators will refer callers to local agencies for help. In Smoking , a chapter has been added on smokeless tobacco, used increasingly by young people. Also new is the discussion of former Surgeon General Koop's proclamation on cigarettes and addiction. Considering that the medical community makes almost daily pronouncements regarding the treatment of AIDS, AIDS does an admirable job of presenting current treatment options, underground drugs and cures, and fundraising efforts. Blot tests are explained, and the question of confidentiality is addressed. The black-and-white drawings in the AIDS book are well done, but the cartoon illustrations in the other two books detract from the seriousness of the subjects. --Christine A. U.F.O.'s Fact Or Fiction
By,
Anne Canadeo
Do aliens exist that is a question that has boggled the human race for centuries dating back to the 1600's. I believe in aliens and I don't think that there aren't aliens scouting the universe in high-tech space ships. Underneath this it tells about Anne Canadeo's book u.f.o.'s fact or fiction.
U.f.o.'s fact or fiction Is a good book. It shows good arguments from both sides (believers and non-believers). This book is a great book to read even if you don't believe in aliens. All together this is a great book to read. It is a interesting book to read that tells stories from believers who say that they have seen a u.f.o. or have been abducted by them. This book is one of the best book around to read that is on the subject of u.f.o.'s. The book has two sides. Really it has two sides so after you read a side you turn the book over and you go to the back cover, open it up, and start reading. All in all this is a great book to read. I recommend this book to people 7-7777 who like to read about u.f.o.'s and alien abductions.
