Thrash-infused death metal, February 20, 2010
This review is from: Uglier & More Disgusting (Audio CD)
1998's Uglier & More Disgusting is the second album from Dellamorte, a Swedish death metal band primarily active in the late 90's that featured past and future members of Carnal Forge, Katatonia and Scar Symmetry. The band played a style of death metal that was far more thrash-oriented (and far less melodic) than most of their Swedish death metal peers.
Uglier & More Disgusting, which was produced by Hypocrisy's Peter Tagtgren, is a wickedly fast and brutal album. It seems, to me at least, like At the Gates with most of the melody stripped out. This album is all speed (in terms of riffs as well as short songs) and fury, albeit a controlled, technical kind of fury. It's also a fairly dark album lyrically, if song titles like "Fallen Angel Crashes Dead" and "666 and Pentagrams" didn't already clue you in.
If you're looking for something similar to older In Flames or Dark Tranquillity, this ain't it. If you're up for a thrash-infused death metal assault along the lines of Carnal Forge or maybe the Haunted, Uglier & More Disgusting should fit the bill. If nothing else, it's a great, simple album to spin when you start feeling like modern metal is getting too pretentious and overwrought.
