Book Description

Monahan is a burned out ex-soldier who thinks he has put the ways of war and the burdens of duty behind him, in exchange for a tumbledown charter boat business and a comforting stream of whiskey. But when a revolutionary zealot manages to stow away aboard Monahan’s boat and get himself murdered there, Monahan is dragged back into a horrid place from that warrior past, and propelled into the heart of a mystery.

Monahan struggles to maintain the vestiges of his honor, to do right by the murdered man’s daughter, and to figure out his part in a scheme to run guns to a group of desperate Central American insurgents. But Monahan doesn’t really know the play and he’s probably wrong about the players: Hector Ruiz might or might not be a doomed rebel true believer. Leo Braswell, professional spook, could be an ally or a deadly nemesis. Elena Ruiz is something more powerful and dangerous than the broken schoolgirl her father describes. And Fat Benny Eltham, a ruthless Jamaican crime lord and sweetly devoted family man, just might wind up as Monahan’s father-in-law.

Delivering the guns is the least of Monahan’s worries. He’s hoping for redemption, but he had better figure out just whom he’s really working for – before it kills him.

The Ugliest of Things is a hard-boiled mystery and a tough-guy adventure of a different sort.

Very good read. A page-turner. Beautifully done descriptions that create images of the action and settings in the mind of the reader. Long build- up that leads to a fast-paced conclusion that cannot be called predictable. If you are a fan of stories with action and surprises, you will enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating read August 22, 2012
By David F
Format:Kindle Edition
The captivation starts with the wonderful cover art. And, from there to the last page, this was a enjoyable read. I like mysteries with a Florida connection and the author does a great job capturing the sense of place in NW Florida. The detailed writing of both the other locales mentioned in the book and of the scenes create strong visuals of the scenes, some of which are pretty intense! The story draws one in and builds curiousity about future adventures of Mr./Sgt. Monahan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A first-rate piece of storytelling August 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The intricately layered story of a man who believes he has left behind the physically and morally treacherous adventures of his past as a military special operative. Instead, he finds himself drawn back into a familiar drama in which he seems to recognize every character's part but his own. It's the story of a man betrayed by the most ruthless adversary of all - his own need for redemption. Beautifully written, well-paced and full of characters worthy of reprise.
