5.0 out of 5 stars The Ugly Duckling
With my grandchildren in mind, I recently searched for free Kindle books with illustrations that would be appropriate for different young age groups. Wow! 3.0 out of 5 stars Cute but not what I was expecting
I like the story but I had thought it would be more of a kids version. Still a good story but not something I would want to read to a child - I'm not sure it would hold their attention very long with so many long pages full and not very many pics.

With my grandchildren in mind, I recently searched for free Kindle books with illustrations that would be appropriate for different young age groups. Wow! In no time at all I found the story by Hans Christian Anderson of "The Ugly Duckling". What a treasure! And...the free Kindle Fire edition is outstanding. Well formatted with many colorful illustrations. I loved the story (even at 75 years old) and knew that it would be perfect for our grandchildren in the range of 5-8 years old. Or, maybe until 100. I read it once again and marvelled at its universality. This is a winner and I give it five stars!!! Outstanding job Graphic Spin and Amazon!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's the ugly duckling..., January 22, 2012

...Just not a toddler friendly version, it is the true version with many words and very few pictures, this will be better for a 5 or 6 year old, not a 16 month old.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not an appropriate picture book for small children, January 25, 2012

I guess I should have read the editorial reviews or the 3 stars reviews before reading the book to my 5 years old. To be honest, I don't remember the "ugliness" in Ugly Ducklings. I remember it as a beautiful story of a "caterpillar turning into a butterfly". I guess all the versions I have listened to or read as a child were edited.

This is the brutal (I guess original?) version of the Ugly Ducklings. You get anywhere from mother and siblings telling the ugly duckling to leave, to others wishing him to be killed by cats, and to hunters and dogs killing wild ducks. Once we got to that one (about half way thru the book), my wife and I both look at each others and stopped reading it. Why made a picture book but not editing it to make it age appropriate for children who read picture books?

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader, September 3, 2007
This review is from: The Ugly Duckling (Hardcover)
Gangly kid ends up swanning around.

Or, if you are a parent, and one of your offspring really looks remarkably different to those that bred it, perhaps something is up in the hanky panky stakes, and one of the birds has been messing around outside the nest. That, and be nice to the funny looking weird kid, of course, as a general rule.
