ok i am just going to get into that awesome song INSANE, mainly the guitar parts. I count five different guitar patterns.first the main guitar riff, then the bass and picked guitar comes in playing almost the same line, then there is a lead guitar with a big fuzz tone. then one guitar in the middle and then two in harmony towards the end playing another staccato line.this song deserves a book on how it was produced. The drum line is dead on not fancy or over powering just perfect syncopation. It all came together on that song for me. Funk Is LIFE !!!

THIS is the CD I have been waiting for, for years ...
I only now realize it has been nearly 30-years that my brother had bought this album and taught me what true FUNK-music was. This was our baseline - every album that came after that, was measured again this album, throughout all those FUNK-years! All the way up in his attic room he would play "Insane" over his stereo and play it loud. The song starts with a teaser towards the true God of Funk, Sir Larry Blackmon. Once that intro reached me, I litterally went INSANE and climb up to his room (sorry Peter, for wrecking your stereo cause of my freaky misbehaviour back then). If you were there, when you witnessed the development of the true FUNK end seventies, but didn't know about this one - be glad you discovered in the new millenium after all! If you knew it back then and dare to do it again, just let them call out for "Larry" again and despite your age, dare to go INSANE! In case you find it informative: I'm a whitey!

This CD is for the fans of Cameo that KNOWS they were the tightest rythmn section on the scene in the late 70's.This CD is covers all bases. FUNK, BALLADS, GOSPEL... nothing is left unexplored and it is played to its funky MAX. The ballads are sung in the high tenor harmonies that made CAMEO an instant favorite. Wayne Cooper (R.I.P) and the crew threw it all in this CD.I was thrilled to finally be able to own this on CD. I have literally waited over 25 years to hear this recording without scratches, skips and/or pops. The true funksters will tell all their old school buddies that this CD is available... I'm reaching for the phone now!

Okay.. Everybody listen real close. (CAMEO) stands alone.. There is no other band that takes you there like (BLACKMON & company).
They have always had a private brand of funk unmatched by any other group of their time. i.e (PARLIMENT,FUNKADELICS,SLAVE,OHIO PLAYERS,GAP BAND). Having (UGLY EGO) in your collection confirms that you are a serious (CAMEO)fan.. However, make sure you get (MACHISMO) in you collection as well.. It is very hard to find but if you do, you'll be stricken with a serious case of "CAMEOSIS" with no cure in sight. I'm still waiting for my (UGLY EGO) cd to arrive in the mail. This is the third time I've owned it, the first time being the original album when it first came out after the (WE ALL KNOW WHO WE ARE)album. Their music is timeless and color blind and very much an artistic standard.

I bought this from reading the recommendations of other Amazon Customers. For once, I must disagree with the plaudits heaped upon this disc. I find this effort merely, competent. Don't get me wrong, CAMEO is a GREAT group! But after listening to this disc, there's NO WAY I would recommend with such praise. My rating: Three stars...

Ok, fyi I was a dj back in that time. I always brought an album soon as they toook it out the box. It was a friday, and I got this joint. I played "Insane" and I knew it was a hit. I played it at the dance that night and of course the dance floor was packed. People walked up and say "who dat?" ........I don't have this CD and of course my album got stolen, however...get this along with the rest of the Chocolate City series. You won't be dissapointed.
INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cameo was still feeling its way in 78 when this one dropped. The funk is still PFunk/EWF horn based, heavy on syncopation and bottom. The ballads are sweet, especially Give Love a Chance and Friend to Me. The winner though is the title cut, after the last verse, Cameo just breaks it down and lets the rhythm section go off. Word Up would give the band the mainstream success it was looking for but UGLY EGO is classic Cameo.

Cameo play the late 70's synth funk card extremely well andwhere it with a flare on the thumping title song,"Insane" and just about every cut here.A note on Cameo in my opinion:where I grew up on the 'Word Up' era small band Cameo this gagantuan addition has a special sharm that I actually didn't fully partake in until I was a teenager with the advent of the Funk Essencial CD series. So I popped onto the vinyl in a used record store and over time fell in love with it's Funkadelic- inspired grooves, yowling vocals and tight arrangements.Even the
