Product Description
Ol' Bear's got a hankering for some Ugly Pie. So off he goes on a search past woodsy little homes where he smells the drifting scent of pie. Grandpa Grizzle's got a pleasin' pumpkin pie. Ma Hickory has a righteous rhubarb pie. Sweet Cicely has a heavenly honey pie. But no one has any Ugly Pie--just the ugliest ingredients you ever did see. Wait one second! Ingredients? Maybe it's time for Ol' Bear to start cookin' up something himself!

For bear cubs who share ol' Bear's itch for an unsightly pie, there's a recipe included.

A Recipe for Ugly Pie

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 Sweet molasses, my-oh-my. I'm itchin' for some Ugly Pie! sings Ol' Bear as he sets out in search of one. Grampa Grizzle, Ma Hickory, and Sweet Cicely have all baked some good-looking treats pumpkin, rhubarb, and heavenly honey pie but not one is what Ol' Bear has a hankerin' for. However, they do provide him with some ugly leftovers from their kitchens wrinkled red raisins, bumpy brown walnuts, and sour green apples. Ol' Bear goes home and realizes that he now has the ingredients for a wonderful Ugly Pie and sets about making one, and his neighbors all come to help him eat it. Large, bright watercolors, acrylics, and collage trace the bear's search as he goes from house to house. Tucked in every corner of the pictures are little woodland creatures that accompany him on his way, help him bake, and eat the final result: My-oh-my-oh-my! Some Ugly Pie! The recipe is appended with clear directions and the admonition that cubs in the kitchen should always have a big bear around while cookin'. This humorous tale should appeal greatly to little cubs everywhere. Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

5.0 out of 5 stars Adore it! February 6, 2013

I love this book so much that my students are performing it (as well as a few other children's books) in the 3rd-grade show in May. It is fun and easily lends itself to dramatic performances. There is even a recipe for "ugly pie" in the back of the book! How cool is that?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! November 26, 2012
Format:Hardcover
My son picked this book up from his school library. What a hoot we had reading this book!! I used my best southern dialect to go along with this great story. My son now wants to try the ugly pie recipe located in the back of the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Can't stand this book February 23, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I'm not opposed to southern vernacular, and I don't always speak in King's English, but this book's language really irritates me. I no longer read it to my son, mostly because of phrases like, "We don't have no Ugly Pie," "The only ugly things I got in my kitchen," and, "it wasn't what Ol' Bear was itchin' for." Yes, many people do speak that way, but it sounds uneducated to my admittedly Yankee ears and I don't want to hold it up as an example of good speech to my 3-year-old, whose young brain is a grammar sponge. If not for that, the book would be fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, creative book...especially for boys. December 31, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I have two sons (ages 5 and 8). They LOVE gross things, like most boys. Santa brought this book for my 5 year old, and he LOVES it. My 8 year old happen to be around while I was reading it and he was captivated as well.

The best part is that there's a recipe so you can make your own Ugly Pie.

One of the best children's books I've read in awhile.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Charming November 14, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is simply charming and a lot of fun to read. My 4-year old gets into it as I always pause so he can say the often repeated words, "ugly pie". Makes it fun for us both. The fact that it adds the recipe (written in the same fun way as the story itself) is an added bonus. Glad to have this one in our family library.
