Editorial Reviews

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2012 release, the fifth album from the New Jersey Alt-Rock trio. The band enlisted legendary recording engineer Steve Albini, famed for his unique ability to capture the ferociousness of a live performance while delivering gorgeous sonic clarity. The album's 14 tracks reaffirm the touchstones of the band; they can still shred and front-woman Marissa Paternoster can still unleash a powerful howl. But it doesn't end there. The album ushers in new explorations for the band, a truly remarkable feat considering their already prolific output. Ugly has the perfect combination of raw energy and honed musicianship that produces the type of Rock 'n' Roll which is still a force to be reckoned with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best yet? April 8, 2012
Screaming Females records have always been totally great, but never totally captured the essence of their live performaces. Ugly does exactly that. This long awaited 5th record blows most of their previous material out of the water in nearly every aspect. I waited day after day, anxiously waiting for a pre order from Don Giovanni, and then proceeded to pick up the special tour edition when I saw them the other night. So yes, I do own two copies of this record. Ugly offers fast punk-like jams, slower and more somber numbers, as well as 5 to 8 minutes rockers; all of which give a very natural flow and theatrical feeling to the album. Steve Albini's engineering on the record gives it a slight polish, but overall feels like a dead ringer for a live performance. Personal standouts include: High, Rotten Apple, Tell Me No, and Slow Birth. You absolutely need this record. Pick up the CD or the vinyl and you'll be glad you gave it one hour of your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Masterpiece July 15, 2012
By Gabe
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I must say that I am completely baffled as to how this album (or this band) has not gone mainstream yet. This album is impressive, to say the least. It is bathed in tracks that stand out, and the album as a whole is worth listening to. Marissa's vocal and guitar skills are the center-piece of this band and for good reason. They are truly remarkable contributions to these tracks. The lyrics are becoming more mature and easy to relate with, managing to still maintain originality throughout. This album has become one of the most played for me this summer. I'm looking forward for more music and I hope that more people will become aware of this awesome band!

5.0 out of 5 stars Screamales melt my face June 19, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
The Screaming Females are a relatively new discovery for me despite being prolific recording and performing artists. This album straight up rocks my brain. Tremendous sound, very well assembled trio with Marissa Paternoster leading the charge vocally and with truly magnificent guitar work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album from a great band. December 19, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I first started listening to the Screaming Females about 2 years ago. I picked up Power Move and Castle Talk simultaneously and nlistened to them non stop. I recently saw them live on the recent tour where they played for the first time in Oklahoma City. They put on a great, if short, show. Marissa is incendiary and the feel of that show has the feel of this album. In fact it catches the electric vibe of seeing them live more than any other album I've heard from them yet. Highly recommended.
