From the creative minds of two love struck artists David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim emerge the Uglydoll family! What started as a drawing of a playful orange character known as Wage has turned into a whole new world of fun! In 2001, when David's soon to be wife and creative partner Sun-Min had to return to Korea, he sent her many "I miss you" letters with his little Wage character drawn at the bottom.

Sun-Min sewed Wage into a push doll and sent him to David as a surprise gift. David asked Sun-Min to sew a couple more for the Giant Robot store in Los Angeles and they sold out in one day! A very excited Sun-Min sewed many more and those sold just as fast! Sun-Min and David then began to pull more characters from the Uglyverse, a universe where UGLY meant unique and special, to translate into plush Uglydolls. They both met again at their very first Uglydoll Toy Fair booth (a small 6x6 booth made of felt and wood) in New York, where they would go on to win Toy Of The Year 4 years later!

Admittedly, this is a lot like the bigger model of the Wedgehead I own with a few exceptions. First, this one is the "sort of small" variation of it, and it's the one that kinda makes trips to different places with me just to remind me of how funny things are. When I want to be calm, when a wave of work is coming or something really scares me, I look at it and think of how odd a breeding ground the world can be. Split-second decisions, the need to know NOW, and cute little monsters not eating Argonauts - that always gives me a laugh. Second, it reminds me of the place where I was as a child and it makes things seem to slow a bit. Where he Wild Things Are, toys like Monster in my Closet or My Pet Monster; there is this feeling of childhood riding shotgun with me - only it doesn't cost the same as something created during those years. Lastly, there is the lesson that can be taught by things like this that people oftentimes miss - the one thing that children fear, monsters, can often be turned into toys that can be identified with so the real dangers in the world, the real monsters, can be avoided.

And, as a child, there is nothing wrong with a good night's sleep to keep the mind alert.

Basically, I love the little Ugly Dolls and all their little features. They come with backstories that are pretty funny, feel nice, and are almost like throwbacks to a time when monsters didn't have to be so monstrous. Besides, if your kid turns out to be a Lovecraftian fan or if you are one yourself, think of this as your Step 1 Cthulhu toy - you just had that first meeting with Dagon and your waiting for your scales to kick in.

Fun for all ages WITH a CAUTION to the parents with little ones because of a choking hazard.
