5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Ugly About this Suit!, September 22, 2008

E. J. Schultz (Milwaukee, WI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Uglysuit (Audio CD)
I suspect that most people coming across a reference to this band will most likely overlook them given the throwaway name they have given themselves - too bad! I purchased this CD in my local indie music store after reading a review and it has become one of my favorites, rarely leaving the CD player in my car. Wave upon wave of chiming Rickenbackers, layered vocal harmonies, insatiable hooks, thoughtful arrangements with varying dynamics, and flawless production will leave you pondering how a band's first effort can sound so accomplished. Reference points? Lots come to mind, some obscure some not, but this band seems to evoke the most memories of 90's-era power/jangle pop - Riverside, Posies, Gigolo Aunts, Sloan, and The LA's come to mind (for me at least). You can cite your obligatory Big Star/Hollies touch points for credibility, I suppose, but The Ugly Suit has found a way to update the obvious with thier own unique flourishes. A noble effort in such a well-traveled genre. Well worth your consideration. Don't blame me if you find yourself singing along with the volume cranked. Utterly sublime.

5.0 out of 5 stars NOT UGLY!!, February 5, 2009
This review is from: Uglysuit (Audio CD)
This band, Ugly Suit they call themselves. This band is the rather opposite of ugly. I wonder what the hell they were thinking with that name? Heads up though, it's chills you'll get instead of ugly from beginning until end. As there's not a skippable track to be found...which is extremely rare. Not exactly your typical group of freshman laying tracks here. You'll figure it out, especially when you hear "Brad's House"-killer track!! My best compliment to them, perhaps the best of what this band has to offer you is their ability to take long songs through so many brilliant changes. They take their songs just far enough from where the songs started, but then the songs come back to their familiar starts. They can play it slow, but also bring it heavy and tight, harmonize, and just jam it out-sometimes like it's a live show. Ugly Suit is not a good band, they're a great band. They're like that not so popular type of band you stumble upon, but when you finally hear it, you think it's good enough to be that "next big thing" in the Indie scene type. And then you're so glad your in-the-know now finally. Do yourself a music favor, GRAB THIS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album! One of my favorite releases of 2008., March 4, 2009
This review is from: Uglysuit (Audio CD)
WOW! What a great freshman effort from a wonderful band. This album is splendid from start to finish. From the beautifully meandering guitars of "Brownblues Passing", to the perfect pop gem "Chicago", to the circus like waltzy sounds of "Anthem of the Arctic Birds", to the perfect indierocking-bliss of the two 7+ minute epic standounts "...And We Became Sunshine" and "Everyone Now has a Smile". This record leaves you wanting more of The Uglysuit.....a lot more. I can't wait for their next record!

[...] One of the best albums of 2008 for sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sparkling Gem Waiting to be Discovered, February 12, 2009

I stumbled across this at the local library and have just fallen for it completely. Such accomplished songwriting and playing--the layers of instrumentation, evocative harmonies, warm melodies that make you so glad you took the time to listen. I hear Death Cab for Cutie and Wilco, but as another reviewer says, there are all sorts of references one could make. I don't really know why, but listening to The Uglysuit has put me back in touch with my favorite old ELO records. There's not necessarily a sonic connection there--I guess great melodies and harmonies necessarily remind you of other great melodies and harmonies. Anyway, each song here sounds so complete, so full of depth and insight, so necessary to the whole. This is one of the best new discs I've heard in a while. I look forward to more from The Uglysuit!
