Book Description

December 1, 1998 Temporis
Icon painting, the ultimate expression of Orthodox Christian art, reached its zenith in the Ukraine between the 11th and 18th centuries. This book spans the entire period, showing the development of the style.

The Ukrainian is a surprising synthesis of the traditions of eastern Byzantine art and the stylistic characteristics of Russian icon-painting. The introduction to this book explains the stages of development of icon-painting over five centuries and discusses the life and work of the masters of icon-painting. The magnificent, full-color photographs include complete iconostasises as well as individual icons painted in the Episcopal and monastic workshops. There are also icons painted in rural environments for home use, which are beautiful examples of naive art. Each painting is fully captioned with a complete description of the provenance.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Despite destruction at the hands of religious, social, and political forces, Ukraine retains a rich heritage of religious icons. Miliayeva (history of art, Univ. of Kiev) here quickly details the development of the icon from the introduction of Byzantine influences in the tenth century through the next eight centuries. Using her expertise on the topic, Miliayeva concisely outlines the history, influences, and styles of Ukrainian icons. Though the text is brief, the true value of the book lies in the illustrations. There are stunning examples of icons and iconostasis in full color, showing fine detail. The faces of these venerated images are human, emotional, and reverent. The lack of an index is disappointing, but this remains a beautiful collection on a unique subject, with no competitive volumes currently in print. Recommended for larger art or Slavic collections.?Karen Ellis, Baldwin Boettcher Lib., Humble, Tex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos but beware of publishing error, July 22, 2005

This review is from: The Ukrainian Icon: From Byzantines Sources to the Baroque (Temporis) (Hardcover)
A fantastic book showing excellent pictures of various Icons, along with detailed blow-ups and historical explanations.

Published in German or English. However, some books were issued with an error. Some books are in English until page 80, then continue in German from then on. Apparently, the pages from the English and separate German editions were mixed up, so there are many "hybrids" of this book published. The books are complete, but in two languages. So beware to get a correct publication.
