This review is from: Ukulele Man (Audio CD)
While almost unknown in the USA, Formby was at one time the highest paid entertainer in the U.K. Almost illiterate, he went to the top in the entertainment field with nothing but his banjo ukulele and a warm, lovable personality to his credit. It doesn't sound like much, but during the great war, it was just what the U.K. needed. Think Jolson, Cantor, WIll Rogers, Ukulele Ike. Add some big teeth and a simple man with a big heart and you have George Formby. Most of this music is simple revue type novelty songs but Formby is a perfectly charming entertainer.
