When these applications work, they work well. The problem is that each application is a bit buggy, and the suite overall is not so easy to use. Although already up to version 6, the programs are not as mature as one would think they would be. The video painting module, for example, worked well with my mouse but refused to move the cursor when using a Wacom tablet. A painting program that doesn't recognize a drawing tablet handicaps the artist using it.
The video capture module managed to work with the FireWire port on my Compaq and control my DV camera. Capturing footage on the fly (as the tape plays) was easy, but setting up a batch capture proved convoluted. The whole workflow of the capture module needs to be smoothed out and streamlined.
The audio editing tool is fairly straightforward and interfaces nicely with the editor, which also works well. I especially liked the Explorer method of navigating media elements and the onscreen layout in general. The editor, in fact, is the best-working element in the suite.
Overall, MediaStudio Pro has a lot to offer. Its execution and stability leave something to be desired, but then again, this is a point-zero release. Ulead surely will be addressing these issues in a 6.5 (or so) release soon. If so, MediaStudio Pro could be a tool to be reckoned with. --Mike Caputo

An Excellent Product,

This review is from: MediaStudio Pro 6.0 (CD-ROM)
I have been using MSPro 6VE since it was released with the ADS Pyro earlier this year. I upgraded to the full version a few months ago. I have had a lot of Fun & Success with the F/X & features such as Picture in Picture, Reverse & Slow motion. I have had fantastic comments from my audience about the suberb quality of my new generation of digital videos. MS Pro6 has recently been upgraded to 6.0.0.2 with a free download from the Ulead site. This includes DV Smartplay which is a boon for OHIC (Firewire 1394)card users, it makes editing much easier & quicker. If it has any bugs I haven't seen them, Video Editing is the hardest thing that your computer can do, optimisation is the answer to many of the problems I have seen posted on news groups. I have found the Video Capture module a great aid in capturing stills off my camcorder with it's precise controls. I don't suffer from any crashes with my Celeron 500, 128mb Ram, Win98SE & I find it a rock solid programme. I have no trouble in unreservedly recommending it, the only problem I have is that it's very addictive :)

I just upgraded to MSP6 and I love the new workflow and features. After a beta patch from some MUG users (MediaStudio Pro Users Group) I can output my video directly from my timeline without rendering. Very cool. And my DV project previews are flawless.(I use a SIIG 1394 card, PIII 500Mhz, 20GB.) Ulead's SmartRender technology works great on all my media. It's great to be at the final output, notice a screw-up, and just render the change before dumping out to tape. I've always liked this feature, but is seems to be even better now. I also use an ATI All-in-Wonder and capture MPEG-2 directly from some older tapes I have. The performance is like I'm working with a standard AVI, with a slight delay on dragging the timeline cursor (no biggy). The added Source window is very nice for multiple cuts from one source clip prior to dropping on the timeline. I like to scale my Source window down and increase my Preview window. Couldn't do that in Premiere. I've always liked the Production Library's clean "windows explorer" style format. The new audio crossfade tool is a real timesaver for the dialogue I cut together, as well as ambient noise. - What else can I say? For the buck . . . no, for any amount of bucks, MediaStudio is a top-notch product with a whole lot more than anyone else gives you.Fred C.

If version 6.0 of MediaStudio Pro is any good, I'll never know. It's very buggy and works about half the time. Worst of all, their customer service department has not responded to any of my email asking for help. Too much money for something that's not ready for prime time. To bad because it has some nice features.
