Low carb electrolyte drink. Works great, tastes awful,

I have been using the Ultima sports drinks for about 3 years now. I commute 30km on my bikedaily in the heat, swim, and work with a trainer in the gym several times a week. I don't like hi-carb sports drinks and they make me groggy and queasy. I have had good results with the ultima. I use it in my bike bottles daily. I drink it before and after workouts. I sweat like a pig. In the height of summer I leave puddles on the ground when i stop at a red light. My own personal experience is that it helps with the fatigue and cramping. Look at the label and you can see that it is a good balance of electrolytes without the empty carbs.
That's the good news. The bad news? Taste. No way around it. The taste is awful. Raspberry is not bad. Orange is ok. The other flavors are simply wretched. As noted by other reviewers it takes some effort to dissolve the powder. Don't expect instant gratification. If you just dump it into cold water you will end up with clumps of it. It is easier to dissolve it in some warm water with vigorous shaking. Then add ice / cold water to dilute it to the proper concentration. Even then it takes a lot of shaking/stirring to get most of it dissolved. It would get 5 stars if it weren't for the taste and the difficulty dissolving the powder.

My husband and I are long distance bicycle riders (100 miles a week and several Century rides a year), and we don't want to drink our calories.
If you read and compare the nutrition label to any other hydration product, this comes in first for vitamins, electrolytes. We've never cramped drinking this. We both like the Raspberry flavor and go through it by the canister.

Ultima provides me with the ultimate in performance. it is a little expensive , at first but when I experienced my performance cycling in a very hot climate I knew this was good stuff. It contains no sugar , but has been engineered to to hydrate and relax muscles under stress for long periods of time. Mt wife and I use this product almost daily. I purchase two at a time from Amazon.

This is a great product. Naturally flavored, no sugar, and all the good stuff. In contrast to some reviewers, I also find the flavor inoffensive-to-pleasant, and have experienced no problems mixing and dissolving it even in cold water.

Bitter flavor, not for athletes,
This review is from: Ultima Replenisher, Wild Raspberry, 90-Serving Canister (Health and Beauty)
This was the sports drink at the California International Marathon in December 2009. I bought a container a few months before to acclimate to using it during runs. I didn't like it at all.
Flavor: awful, not at all fruit-like, bitter in a "fake sugar" way. I understand that this uses more natural ingredients and isn't supposed to taste like sugar... I applaud the effort but not the outcome. It tastes terrible! Maybe the other flavors are better? Not for athletes. It's marketed to athletes, but athletes need two things: carbs and calories. This has neither. It's useless as a training/racing fuel or recovery drink. It does have electrolytes, but I'd rather take HAMMER NUTRITION ENDUROLYTES or some other dedicated electrolyte product so I can skip the terrible flavor. Second opinion: I'm not a fan, but my wife does like it (including the flavor!), and uses it for her runs. The other reviews are overwhelming positive, so I'm in the minority. This is definitely not the product for my needs, but it might be for yours. Good luck!

Ultima Replenisher is a complete, balanced electrolyte add-in. I love this stuff before, during and after a heated yoga class, regular aerobic workout or just when I'm feeling a little cotton mouth. Nothing hydrates you as fully or as rapidly as does this.
Apart from orange, all the other flavors are GHASTLY [in not just my opinion but the opinions of many many friends of mine] and gross. Orange is okay, not at all bad, but raspberry seems to go best with the natural flavorings in this product. I was buying these in bulk from their website until I noticed Amazon carried the product :]

Works great on hot century rides,

I've been using Ulitma for about 4 years after I cramped up using Gatorade, etc. Since then I have done many HOT centuries & have never cramped up again. I get my energy from Goo & bars. Plus without sugar, it takss up less room in bento box & does not "cake up" in the heat & humidity.

I run and do hot yoga, and use this drink mix to hydrate and replenish after both. I do like the way it makes me feel, and there's something about it that makes me crave it after a long run or a session of yoga. But I agree with the reviewer who said this mix tastes "vitamin-y." It's not terrible, it's just not delicious the way that an ice-cold grape Gatorade is after a hard workout. It is also true that it is hard to dissolve completely in cold water. I usually have some grainy stuff left over at the bottom of my bottle or glass. But the fact that it has minerals in it and is low in calories is worth sticking with it for me.

This product dissolves nicely and easily and has a pretty good taste. It seems to store well and work to help me stay hydrated. My only complaint is that when I run while carrying the bottle of Ultima, it gets foamy and bubbly in the bottle. After running , it isn't easy to refill this bottle with more Ultima because there is a big foamy layer on top.

For No Sugar It Is Excellent!!!,

This review is from: Ultima Replenisher, Wild Raspberry, 90-Serving Canister (Health and Beauty)
Personnaly speaking Raspberry is not very good, but I can't complain. When you mix this drink it is better if you can give 15 minuetes or so to mix up. If you can't you get a minor chaulky taste. I do however like it very much. I can't have sugar, so my options are few and I am very happy with this product. I am on my third 90 serving bottle.
Bottom line---if you wnat sugar free and tasty this is your product !!! |
