I live in South Dakota and winter can be COLD. After years of using 1500 watt stock tank heaters, I decided to try one of these to save on electricity. I have one in a 100 gallon stock tank. It keeps the ice off the top down to about 10 degrees. When it gets colder, I drop a floating one in the tank. It saved me $200 on my first month's electric bill after I bought it. We have four stock tanks and I am just sorry I did not find these sooner. Last winter my electric bill was over $500, so far this winter the highest has been just under $300.

I liked this so well, I bought two to put in my five gallon bucket poultry nipple waterers. I dropped one in each bucket and They do an amazing job. The chickens have fresh water available all hours all winter long. The big advantage to these is that they don't need an extra cage around them like the old fashioned stock tank heaters. It is safe, and does what it is supposed to, giving my horses and chickens water in the coldest days of winter.

This product is crap. It burned out in two weeks. I used it for a very small water garden and I plugged it in just prior to going on vacation. Upon my return it had failed miserably and is now in a large block of ice. The Western NY weather being what it is I will have to wait until spring to get it out...I have contacted Amazon about the return, we'll see how that goes. Also I contacted the company and they had a very curt reply about returning it to Amazon, not them. Be wary of this product and keep in mind, if it fails the ice can damage your garden, pond, trough, etc. I gave it a two because it actuall worked for a week or so.

I live in a cold part of PA and use my Watt pail heater in my big horse pasture. It heats a 100 gallon water trough better than any other water heater I've used. My horses are pretty naughty and did very well at not bothering this one.

This heater is not working well for me, but that's because I didn't read the description well enough. It will automatically turn on and off keeping a bucket from freezing (probably saving a lot of electricity). I actually need one that stays on to a desired temperature. My bad (lazy reader). However, it does work as described and the protective housing and heavy cord are very nice for the price.

This has been our coldest winter in quite some time, used my heater in the hen house for their bucket waterer, worked like a charm, we love it!

This product has not delivered on any of the promises. I live in Western Washington and our winters are mild, for the most part. First time use, I submerged this heater into a 7 gallon water trough and plugged it into a thermal cube in the evening. The next morning, I was shocked to find the water STEAMING, almost bath temperature! In hind sight, I wish I had used a thermometer to record the actual water temperature but bottom line, the water was not drinkable, it was too hot. I tried to return the product but I had purchased it in the October and did not use it until December and Amazon's return window had expired. So, I made the most of it by manually plugging the heater in while I was cleaning stalls in the morning and evening and unplugging it when I was done. I have one horse, so I spend an average of ten minutes on barn chores which gave this unit ample time to thaw quarter or thicker inch of ice off the top. If the water level was low, I would refill the tank and the heater literally sizzled when the cold water hit it. Just like the sizzle you get when you put out a camp fire.

Well, all this is moot as of this morning, the unit quit working altogether.

I wish there was a zero star option, this product deserves it.

I've had this 250 watt pail heater for about 8 weeks in a 75 gallon tank for a horse in a 3 sided barn in the middle of Wyoming. I was hauling five gallon buckets to the horse every morning and night (he was injured). When I got my tank and 250 w heater, life got so much easier. This heater works perfect and once he pulled it out by the cord and stepped on it and cracked the top, but it still works perfect and keeps the water about 40 degrees. After that, I put the provided safety clip on the cord and put plywood across the top of the back half of the tank. For 3 weeks that has worked with no problems so far. We have 2-750 watters from K&H in 2-150 gallon tanks outside and they do perfect also down to -15. We have electricity on this lot just for the horse water heaters so I have estimated that I was paying $30/month for the 2-750 watters ($15 each) and am estimating about $5/month per 250 watts. These were plugged in 24/7 through average highs in 20-30 and lows 20 to -15. The electric company runs about 2 months behind on charges so not sure what the 250 watt will actually cost, but will update this if it seems different.
