First published in 1939 in the fantasy magazine Unknown, this rollicking Arabian Nights yarn may not measure up to the best of Hubbard's work from the pulp era (novels like Fear and Typewriter in the Sky), but it remains readable escapist fare. The novella opens with a typical Hubbard scenario: the impoverished hero, Stevie Jebson, is sitting on a park bench and pondering his wretched fate when "research scientist" Dr. Thomas Bolton comes along and rescues Stevie because he has a theory to prove—on someone else. Bolton sends Stevie whirling through space on a series of misadventures that include a meeting with the comely queen of a sandy kingdom who would have made even Sir Richard Burton sit up straight. A handful of assorted villains, from ghouls to ifrits, add to the fun. (Oct.)

Not great, but entertaining enough,

The Ultimate Adventure is an old fashioned fantasy story. It mixes adventure and humor and does it pretty well. And it's a short book, in other words, a short read. The Ultimate Adventure is not a great book but it provides the reader with a great glimpse into the fantasy novels of its time, and it is entertaining while doing so.
As it's a very short book, it should be available in a low priced edition.

Finding this book was a welcome surprise. I have enjoyed L. Ron Hubbard's early fiction writing, and I'm glad that someone has decided to publish the old stuff rather than his Scientology stuff.
This story is fast-paced, but shallow. A vagrant runs into a mad scientist performing sensory-deprivation experiments. The mad scientist postulates that wha we know as fiction is reality in another dimension. Our hero finds himself in the City of Brass of Arabian Knights fame, encountering ghouls, djinn, and, of course, a lovely princess that he has to rescue. At 125 pages, you'll probably read through it in one sitting.
