5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
We bought this book because we own a vacation rental in Hendersonville NC. We have lived here all our lives but this book was even interesting for us. Our guest throughly enjoy it. Everyone want's one for themselves.

1.0 out of 5 stars More like a bunch of lists
I didn't find this book to be at all what I expected. It has alot of lists, may be more helpful for someone moving to North Carolina than visiting or vacationing.

Ultimate Guide to Asheville is a very personal and personable guidebook by someone who clearly loves his adopted city. Reading the guide is rather like chatting with a well-informed friend who stands behind his recommendations. The detailed illustrations are lovely and the historical information is highly entertaining. The book includes a great deal of practical information, like how much time to allow to see specific sites or how difficult a particular hike is or where to buy the local paper to find event listings. It may not be a traditional tourist guide in that it includes some things that are more oriented to the longer term (or permanent) visitor (e.g., schools and hospitals) but I enjoyed reading it (which I can't always say for a guide book) and it has reinforced my interest in visiting Asheville. My only complaint is that there could be more/better maps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some comments from the author's wife, June 3, 2008
This review is from: The Ultimate Guide to Asheville & The Western North Carolina Mountains, 3rd Edition (Ultimate Guide to Asheville & Hendersonville) (Perfect Paperback)
My husband's book is 476 pages long, and contrary to the negative reviews of the two other reviewers, it is not just a bunch of lists. Far from it, it is a comprehensive reference book, written in the format of a traditional guidebook, with commentary on restaurants, accommodations, natural and cultural attractions in the mountains, history, architecture and much more. It is proven guidebook, covering every aspect of Western North Carolina that would be of interest to visitors, and over 20,000 copies have been sold.

This book is just a bunch of lists. It has no information that you couldn't find in the phone book. Unbelievably bad. Do not get this book

Ok, I got this book as well as the Hidden Carolinas today.

First impressions for both of these books was to trow them in the trash.
(I am venting my anger here a due to my disappointment and frustration)

Why cant someone just write a travel guide without all the fluff?!

For your average Joe who is looking for a go here, see that, these are probably not for you.

If this book was condensed down to 50 pages I would have preferred that greatly.

If a future travel writer reads this PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, keep it simple! stop thinking your gonna be the next best seller for Christ sake!

I have a trip to plan, and don't need to spend a month reading a bunch of BS.
