Monologues not well-chosen,
By Not-So-Gentle Reader (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ultimate Audition Book: 222 Monologues, Two Minutes and Under (Monologue Audition Series) (Paperback)
This book was a real disappointment. I am not sure if the editor was lazy or used whatever source material was the cheapest or what. Out of 100+ selection for men, maybe 3 or 4 were at all useful. There are much, MUCH better monologue anthologies out there - pass on this one and keep looking!

This review is from: The Ultimate Audition Book: 222 Monologues, Two Minutes and Under (Monologue Audition Series) (Paperback)
i would think this book would be for 25+or so actors...i looked through all the monologues and as a teenager, i didn't find a lot of them very interesting or appealing. this book is definetely not a book for beginners because a lot of the monologues are to long for a beginner.....

Wow this book is great. I know that all the monologues in this book are at least 2 minutes and there is a great range of dramatic to comidic. All the monologues have dates by them so you know if they are classic or modern. Buy this book!

I purchased this book after purchasing Vol. 4 (222 Comedy Monologues 2 Minutes & Under). It's alright, if you're not looking for any comedy. The closest it comes to is "Serio-Comic", and even those are only slightly amusing. Although it covers a great range of time periods and ages, I still get more use out of the comedic collection found in Vol. 4

A varied assortment of a wide range of material. A great book for a student of acting or someone looking for some fresh material.

I regret buying this book. It has some pro's but the con's outweigh them by far. If you are a woman (like myself), this book is useless. Out of the 253 pages in the book, only 112 pages are "Women's Monologues." The rest are "Men's Monologues." I find this disturbing and upsetting. While I realize that the theater and film industries have been historically predominantly run by men, in this day and age, and with the book published in 1997, one would think there would be more of an equal ground. After looking through the women's monologues, I only found a few that were bordering on feasible to use for an audition, or even for practice in an acting class. Not only are many of them antiquated, but they also tend to be awkward. As a woman in her mid-twenties, it was very difficult to find age- appropriate material. Many of the monologues are geared towards women 30 -50 years old. Though many the monologues are by well known authors or from well known plays, and may be good monologues in themselves, that doesn't mean they are good for auditions. I would not recommend this book, unless you are a male in is 40's who wants to do classical monologues, or if you want to totally blow an audition. I did not find this book useful by any means. There are so many better books out there. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

This is what a monologue book should be. All the monologues were well written and had the play title on the page so you were actually able to look them up and find the context of the monologue.
There was a wide variety of time periods, styles, and characters. They were very well written and actually monologues (spoken to another person on stage) rather than soliloquies (spoken to audience or to oneself) where the two are often confused when people try to compile these types of books.

In my opinion, these monologues were really outdated and most of them were set before the 1900s. Really found this book kind of useless.

It isn't bad, it contains numerous monologue types. The comedy monlogues leave something to be desired.
