Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up-This collection of monologues features relevant topics and issues that young people face, providing the actors with a broad array of personalities to explore. Circumstances include parental relationships, helping others, emotional issues, sexual orientation, dating situations, depression, etc. The three sections are organized by monologues that can be performed by males, females, or are not gender specific. The selections are brief, real, and sometimes touching. They are simple enough to learn quickly and will be an entertaining way for readers to hone their acting techniques. Some additional directions provide help in further understanding the characters and situations. A valuable resource for teachers and students alike.-Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE

From Booklist

Gr. 10-12. Young actors who have searched for audition material written in the voice of teenage characters will welcome this resource. The text is divided into monologues for males, females, and anyone, then subdivided again into comic and dramatic selections. Each monologue is timed to be performed in one minute, the length of monologues allowed in the International Modeling and Talent Competitions, for which the author is a coach. Teens may find some of the voices cliched, even insensitive (a girl's riff about the negatives of having large breasts may hit some young teens the wrong way, for example), and some of the entries, particularly in the dramatic sections, veer into adult situations--marriage conflicts, job stress, etc. But the majority of the pieces emphasize believable teen experiences, and young performers will find much in this diverse compendium of characters and settings to use immediately or to inspire their own writing. 5.0 out of 5 stars Essentials for your teenage acting career!!, October 9, 2000
By
Martin (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ultimate Audition Book for Teens: 111 One-Minute Monologues (Young Actors Series) (Paperback)
As a teenage actor, I know how hard it is to go blindly to a library or bookstore and page through hundreds of books trying to find a monologue that simply matches your age and personality. The title of Janet's book reveals exactly what is inside. The monologues not only fit teens, but even ages ranging from children to adults. Each monologue is simple and has many levels for you to display your talent. They start out with an attention getter, slope up and down throughout the monologue and end with good closing statements. This is truly the only monologue book you'll ever need to buy. Absolutely perfect for auditions! Buy this book and save yourself a lot of time and energy!

Great book Janet! We're all proud of you! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Monologues--Short, Smart, Witty and Very Commercial, September 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ultimate Audition Book for Teens: 111 One-Minute Monologues (Young Actors Series) (Paperback)
As a playwright, I see many monologues performed. The best actors choose monologues that immediately capture the audiences attention. I've notice many actors, and especially actresses, choose lengthy monologues, or worse, ones that don't fit their age group simply because they can't find anything appropriate. If the actor is allowed to show their range--it's all the better! Janet Milstein's book gives actors a fighting chance. The monologues are easy to grasp and go somewhere. It had 3 great monologues in the first 5 pages. I bought it for my best friend who already loves it. Do yourself a favor if your an actress/actor---Buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but..., July 4, 2004
This review is from: The Ultimate Audition Book for Teens: 111 One-Minute Monologues (Young Actors Series) (Paperback)
I did find some extremely clever monologues in this book. Some were good, others made me cringe (either at outdated 'cool' language or the extreme stereotypical nature). However, all of the monologues in this book are ones that have earned people awards. These monologues or monologues that people auditioning you will more than likely know. I enjoyed reading some of the monologues--there were some pretty funny ones, and some good drama (considering it's for teens). These are great to work on in a classroom or workshop, but I would not recommend using this book--or really any monologue book--when going to a professional audition.
