Insightful for the novice., August 18, 1999

If you you're an average joe, just wanting to make his car the prettiest on the block, this is the book for you. Lots of helpful techniques for the beginner but nothing special for an advanced detailer. The book needs to be updated as well-clearcoat finishes aren't really "high-tech" anymore. Color photos would make a nice addition as well. Still a VERY helpful book; my car has never looked better!

While Mr. Jacobs has some technical knowledge, there is a lack of everyday, practical techniques. To win a concours, you must also have an in depth knowledge of the judging for your class and how to knowledge of paints and polishing. As a winner of several concours, I would recommend this book only as a primer, but not the "secrets revealed" book I had hoped for.

Good, but reader needs to keep in mind what's practical., September 1, 1998

Review of the 1995 edition. Written by someone who's obviously very meticulous. For the average reader, it may be overly so. He mostly recommends using the mildest cleaning agent possible (+ time +elbow grease) but admits some (popular) cleaning chemicals do work (saves time) at the user's own peril. Not enough on ragtops. No specific recommendations such as use product x on a Cougar 95's dash.

Good starting point, but doesn't go far enough!, July 24, 1999

Mr. Jacobs' book is a good basic overview of automotive detailing, but there wasn't a lot of information in the book that I didn't already know. The section on detailing for Concours d'Elegance events was interesting, but again not overly insightful. I really not sure that this topic can be covered adequately in a 200 page book, regardless of the author.
