I have been playing guitar for 10 years and know what it takes to become a serious guitar player. I bought this book for a church youth group kid who is a true beginner at playing any instrument. 2.0 out of 5 stars Need more explanations
This book probably was written for absolute beginners. The book is only 40 pages long and spends 15 of its pages on background information on how to read notes, tabs, and on how to hold and pick a bass guitar. If you're a guitar player, you probably know most of this already. The rest of the book is a play along to the CD with no explanation why a particular note was...

I have been playing guitar for 10 years and know what it takes to become a serious guitar player. I bought this book for a church youth group kid who is a true beginner at playing any instrument. It is the best bass guitar book ever written for beginners. I have tried to find a bass guitar tutorial over the internet that is free, but this book was worth paying the $8.95. This book comes with a cd that provides a thorough tutorial. The voice on the cd and the play-along segments made me feel like I was getting a private bass lesson from a professional. If you're debating whether or not to get this book, I would say that if you're a beginner and want to learn the basics of bass guitar as well as the slap/pop technique, I strongly recommend this book. Don't forget to check "yes" if you thought that my recommendation was helpful!

5.0 out of 5 stars For the true beginner..., March 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ultimate Beginner Bass Basics (Paperback)
If the electric bass is your first instrument this is the book for you. It teaches you technique, scales and common bass lines for ballads, country, latin and blues. It gets you started with music theory without boring you through pages of uninteresting riffs. The four step approach really got me started where you learn three different riffs (each containing a mini music theory lesson) and then put it all together. The book comes with a CD which is at times silly but of utmost importance when just starting out. I bought three books and this was my favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners., May 22, 2002

This is the method I use for my beginning students. It contains examples of building bass lines within the chord changes, and explains the theory behind it. It also explores a variety of styles, giving the student exercises to play along with an accompaniment track. The CD that comes with the book is an outstanding teaching aid for studying on your own, or as a supplement between private lessons. The only downside is that I have yet to find a follow up book by these same authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slap & Pop, October 1, 2000

As a oldie but goodie bass guitar player, I found Dale Titus' book very good and it helped me out a lot. I learned some new riffs and I am learning how to slap/pop...he explains just how easy it is to do and the CD is great. All the songs on the CD are good and easy to play. Thanks Dale for putting back the spunk in my bass playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginning bass player!, March 3, 2000

When I found Dale's book, I went home immediatly and popped in the cd. With the book layed out in front of me and my bass in my hands, it wasn't hard to begin playing the tablature. I found that I could follow along with the cd pretty easily and soon I was on my way to becoming a good bassist. I recommed this book to anyone who wants to start playing the bass. You won't regret it!

This book probably was written for absolute beginners. The book is only 40 pages long and spends 15 of its pages on background information on how to read notes, tabs, and on how to hold and pick a bass guitar. If you're a guitar player, you probably know most of this already. The rest of the book is a play along to the CD with no explanation why a particular note was chosen to start and to end on. So you can't really create your own bass line for different songs even after you complete the lessons. It's a short book so you can go through the material in few days. If you had no exposure to music in the past, this book will start you off and help you become familier with the instrument. If you are looking to learn more, perhaps books on bass by Berklee school of music is a better deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best!, June 24, 2002

Tried my hand at guitar by using different books, but that didn't go so well, and so when I decided that I wanted to learn bass I was sceptical about buying one of these books to learn from instead of lessons, however it was the best thing I ever did!!!! From all I understand the guy has helped create this works at the Guitar Institute in CA. Either way, this is a GREAT buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Starting Point, May 11, 2000

When our bass player quit I was asked to try the bass (I am an acoustic guitar player). This book taught enough skills so I was effective within a matter of 2 weeks of practice. Excellent book, especially the play along CD.
