I had absolutely no musical background, but I learned basic rock drumming by watching Drum Basics Step One and Two. Sandy Gennaro's instructions are very easy to understand and follow, and you don't have to know how to read music to start playing. I would strongly recommend using these videos together with the book Drum Basics, Steps One and Two Combined (The Ultimate Beginner Series) by Mike Finkelstein and Sandy Gennaro, a Yamaha DTXpress electronic drum kit, and practice, practice, practice.

This video is great for anyone who knows some basics but doesn't know where to head from there. Gennaro's instructions are easy to understand, which makes the learning process a lot less frustrating. This video covers the variation in rock beats, basic note values, song structure and the role of the drummer in a song, how to play a simple drum fill, how to play a basic blues beat, and finally some warm-up excersies. If you are a complete beginner then you should purchase the step one video first.

Sandy can teach anyone to play drums. This video follows step 1. When you finish you should be able to lay down a basic rock and blues beat in just a little over an hour.
These videos are for the ultimate beginner. Learning to play a drum set is alot like learning to ride a bike, and Sandy will get you up and going.
Sandy continues the Step 1 video(you should have watched this one first). Sandy covers time signitures and practicing various beats. He goes on into blues drumming in this video.
These videos are geared for first time drummers. If you just purchased a drum set these are for you. Even if you are thinking of buying a drum set or are interested in drumming you can buy a set of sticks and learn from these videos.
