Book Description

Several years ago Ryan Robert noticed his niece was having body image issues. She obsessed about her weight and let it take control of her life. Eventually she even lost the confidence she once effortlessly displayed.

As an avid runner, Ryan knew if he was able to get his niece to start running she would gain self-confidence, better mental and physical acuity. It would also allow her a better focus on health rather than weight. Ryan started writing notes to his niece about different aspects of running. These notes became the impetus for his book Running Inspired.

Running Inspired provides a wealth of information for the non-runner and beginning runner. The book covers everything from proper form, to shoes, to running schedules, and food. There is also information on how to stay motivated including visualization exercises. These are the tools Ryan used to teach his niece to run inspired and they will help you too.

Ryan's writing style is friendly, easy to read, and non-judgmental. If you have ever thought about running, even if you've never tried it, Running Inspired is the perfect place to start.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"As an avid half marathoner, I suffered severely from a blood clot in my lung and was certain I would never run again. I turned to Running Inspired to find the confidence I needed to start over as well as expert tips on training, gear, nutrition and hydration. Most importantly, this book helped me to stay motivated and reach my goals. It is an all-inclusive resource for anyone who wants to start exercising, lose weight, or take on a new challenge in the face of adversity."

"This entire book can help everyone from the novice runner to the experienced marathoner. I fall somewhere in between and found the book had all the information a runner could want and need to be a better runner. If you too want to run happy, treat your body right during training, and take your running to a higher level — buy this book."

"I was so thankful to find Ryan Robert's book for beginner runners. Moms RUN This Town is a running club with a huge percentage of beginner runners. This easy-to-read guide is exactly what I needed to prepare my new runners with the basic knowledge they need to get started.  Readers will find all the "must know" topics covered for beginner runners and will definitely leave feeling more knowledgeable, inspired and ready to hit the road."

"Whether a beginner, an athlete returning to the sport after a break or a seasoned runner; there really is something for everyone here. Ryan has managed to put a wealth of information into this relatively small book. The fact that it takes into account the mental aspects of the sport, in addition to the physical, makes the book a winner."

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't sing enough praises for this book!!! February 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I wrote a super long review on my blog which you can find at the Moms RUN This Town blog...

But the bottom line is this book is hands down the best book for beginning runners. I have a nation wide running club and after reading this book I have encouraged my members - long time runners and new - to get this ebook. It's a quick and easy read - very conversational, nothing overly technical - but still is very comprehensive and covers pretty much EVERYTHING that new runners want to know!!!

If you want to start running or are a new runner - read this. If you have been running a while - I still recommend you read this book so that you can refresh your memory on what it's like to be a new runner and when new runners ask for tips you will know where to point them.

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sensible advice...except for one major thing July 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was totally inspired by "Born to run" and looking for a more practical guide as a complement.
I downloaded a fair few samples on my Kindle and the Ultimate Beginners Guide was my favorite by far, so I bought it.

I loved that it was accessible, easy to read even when it came to pretty technical stuff; and it was not repetitive (which is often the case with "how to" books).
An excellent addition are the training schedules at the end of the book, adapted to different categories : active beginners with already some physical condition, non-active beginners, overweight people and +50 year old people.
The schedules include days "off" and some flexibility. (My only complaint there is if you buy a paper version of the book, you can go download & print them with a code that comes with the receipt, which you don't get with a Kindle edition - bummer).
EDIT August 2012 : according to other books I read since, and from experience, the training programmes are a little on the hard side, you might want to take it easy to avoid injuries!

The author really kept a "keep it simple" attitude throughout the book. There are just enough facts and background to satisfy one's curiosity but not too much that you felt weighed down.

There is however a major flaw in the book - well, there are several schools of thoughts on the subject... the author talks about a heel strike type of running, which according to more and more research is actually potentially damaging and less efficient long-term.

That striked me as odd since he also mentions running barefoot as a good exercise. "Natural running" is closest to the way we run barefoot, or did as kids, with less heavily padded shoes, so your feet actually get to feel the ground and adapt - I found a great video which breaks it down in a neat 8 minutes, there's lots of info about that on blogs and websites if you're interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Beginning Runner! February 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What I like most about Ryan's book is that it is simplistic in nature. If you are looking for great detail or have been running for years, this book is not for you. Who is it for then? The complete beginner, someone like me who is going from nothing to jogging a few days a week in an effort to maybe lose weight, get in shape or maybe take on a new challenge. In fact, Ryan's book offers several training plans based on multiple reasons why someone may take up a running program: Active Beginners, Non-Exercisers, Weight Loss, and People 50 and Over. I wish I had copies of this book to hand out to people when they say, "I'm too (fat, old, busy, slow) to start running now." If it can be done (which it can because I did it), Ryan will help you find the way.

His book includes everything that a new runner would need to know (or a seasoned runner who needs a great refresher) from hydration to nutrition to proper mechanics and good running form to increasing self-confidence to improving performance and staying motivated.

If you are thinking about running, getting healthy, losing weight or simply getting off the couch and taking those first steps - don't miss out on a must-have resource to get you a smart, effective, affordable and fun start!
