Editorial Reviews

The Great Escape: In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft III, a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history — brilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn — who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted.

One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, The Great Escape is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven), screenwriters James Clavell (Shogun) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar), and composer Elmer Bernstein. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is epic entertainment that “captivates, thrills and stirs” (Variety).

Patton: Winner of seven 1970 ACADEMY AWARDS® including Best Picture and Best Actor for George C. Scott,* Patton is a riveting portrayal of one of the twentieth century’s greatest military geniuses. As rebellious as he was brilliant, George Patton (Scott) was the only general truly feared by the Nazis, yet his own volatile personality was the one enemy he could never defeat.

*1970: Best Picture, Directing, Actor (George C. Scott), Writing, Film Editing, Art Direction, Sound.

Tora Tora Tora: "Tora! Tora! Tora!" is the Japanese signal to attack - and the movie meticulously recreates the attack on Pearl Harbor and the events leading up to it. Opening scenes contrast the American and Japanese positions. Japanese imperialists decide to stage the attack. Top U.S. brass ignore it's possibility. Intercepted Japanese messages warn of it - but never reach F.D.R.'s desk. Radar warnings are disregarded. Even the entrapment of a Japanese submarine in Pearl Harbor before the attack goes unreported. Ultimately the Day of Infamy arrives - in the most spectacular, gut-wrenching cavalcade of action-packed footage ever. You'll see moments of unsurpassed spectacle and heroism: U.S. fighters trying to take off and being hit as they taxi; men blasted from the decks of torpedoed ships while trying to rescue buddies; savage aerial dogfights pitting lone American fliers against squadrons of Imperial war planes. It's the most dazzling recreation of America's darkest day - and some of her finest hours.

Twelve O'Clock High: This gritty World War II action drama staring Gregory Peck, Oscar winner Dean Jagger, Hugh Marlowe, Gary Merrill and Millard Mitchell is seen as one of the most realistic portrayals of the heroics and perils of war. Convinced an air force commander (Gary Merrill) is at the breaking point, Brigadier General Savage (Peck) takes over his struggling bomber group. Kind and understanding, he adopts a crushing discipline to revitalize the demoralized troop. At first resentful and rebellious, the flyers gradually change as Savage guides them to amazing feats. But the stress of command soon takes it's toll and the weary general reaches his own breaking point.

The Longest Day: This special collector's commemorative edition has been issued in honor of the June 6, 1944 Allied invasion of France, which marked the beginning of the end of Nazi domination over Europe. The attack involved 3,000,000 men, 11,000 planes and 4,000 ships, comprising the largest armada the world has ever seen.

The Longest Day is a vivid, hour-by-hour recreation of this historic event. Featuring a stellar international cast, and told from the perspectives of both sides, it is a fascinating look at the massive preparations, mistakes, and random events that determined the outcome of one of the biggest battles in history. Winner of two 1962 Oscars® (Special Effects and Cinematography), The Longest Day ranks as one of Hollywood's truly great war films.

Audio: English: Dolby Surround 4.0 & DTS 5.1 HD / Spanish & French: Mono
Language: Dubbed: English, French, & Spanish / Subtitled: English & Spanish
Theatrical Aspect Ratio: Widescreen: 2.20:1

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate WWII Blu-Ray Bundle June 9, 2013
This is a bundle of five war movies. Each of these films deal with the second World War, including major events such as D-Day and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Together, the five films would give a decent experience of what the war was like from multiple points of view. Of course, we should be cautious about turning to movies to get our factual history of the war... but these films are an entertaining way to appreciate what an event like WWII meant for our country, our soldiers, our allies, our adversaries, and our world.

Now, these films are older, so they aren't necessarily going to have the same level of spectacle as more recent films like "Saving Private Ryan" or "Pearl Harbor". But they have just as much heart, and there are a variety of fantastic performances across the five films.

Please note that this is not a box set, it is just the five movies sold together - each movie comes in its own separate blu-ray case. If you're a fan of these films, then they've never looked and sounded better than they do on these blu-ray discs. Some have expressed concern with the video transfers on some of these movies, but I find the image to be fine in most cases (although it could certainly be better).

Here are the links to the individual releases (prices are always changing, so sometimes it might be cheaper to buy the films individually):
Patton (Blu-ray Combo Pack)
Tora Tora Tora [Blu-ray]
The Great Escape [Blu-ray]
Twelve O'Clock High [Blu-ray]
The Longest Day [Blu-ray]

1.0 out of 5 stars ???An Overpriced, Lame- brained bundle June 21, 2013
Let's see: buy these films individually on amazon and get them all for around $60, OR buy them in a bundle for $116!!!

Who comes up with these "deals?" (And who found this review - which warns people off from paying almost double what they should be paying through amazon to obtain this films - unhelpful?)

The Ultimate Rip-Off.
