Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

From the creators of the wildly popular book, The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions comes a second inventive collection of wild potions and crazy crafts--all easily and inexpensively made from common household items. Kids should have a ball creating such wonders as an edible ocean (gummy fish suspended in Jell-O) or a greenhouse grown in a plastic bag. Among the 78 recipes are instructions for making such revolutionary new artistic mediums as whipped cream finger paint, dryer lint clay, and toothpaste putty. Quite a few of the concoctions are edible--chocolate bowls and fruity leather roll-ups sound particularly delicious--while others make great party activities or simple gifts. Almost all the concoctions make a perfect diversion for a bored child on a rainy afternoon. The simple, well-organized instructions make the book easy for kids ages 8 and up to use, though the authors call for adult supervision on all recipes. This is the kind of craft book that's bound to become a family favorite--in time, its large-format black and white pages should be covered with the residue of many hours of messy fun. (Ages 8 to 12) --Marianne Painter

4.0 out of 5 stars More Gooey Things to Do..., July 25, 2000
This review is from: The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2: More Than 65 New Wacky, Wild & Crazy Concoctions (Paperback)
Ever wonder what to do with that huge pile of dryer lint, old coffee grounds, left over mashed potatoes or extra spaghetti noodles? This book could have the answers - and more.

If you liked the first Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions, and you want more gooey things to do with your child, this book is for you! While we didn't enjoy this book as much as the first one, it was still a welcome addition to "I've got nothing to do" solutions.

With yet another 60 plus ideas to educate and entertain, indoors and out, this book is great for giving kids something to do that isn't TV or Nintendo. This book has more ideas for gift kids can make plus edible recipes than the other.

There's an edible frosting dough (kids can make sculptures to add to the top of a cake!), a delicious wreath for the holidays, a shake and make whipped cream, and a fruit roll-up recipe that's a little different.

There are several art projects - a lot of alternative painting ideas, there are a lot of Garden Concoctions - Apple Head People, Indian Corn Jewelry, Living Words, Bird Cookies, EggHead Garden, Greenhouse in a Bag - that are wonderful for kids who like the nature). We especially like the number of concoctions that can be made as gifts for friends and relatives - Magic Candle Art, Ice Lanterns, Kooky Clingers, Magic Photo Art, Peppermint Wreaths, Silly Stained Glass, Cool Crayon Tee Shirts. Don't let the 4 - 8 age recommendation on this book fool you - older kids will like this book - just leave it lying around the kitchen and older kids will probably find something they'd like to make!

Adult supervision is definitely needed. Many of the ingredients are common to most households, but some are not. Most projects take pre-planning. The only addition I'd make to this book would be a checklist of common ingredients, to add to my grocery shopping list!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2, April 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2: More Than 65 New Wacky, Wild & Crazy Concoctions (Paperback)
I think that this is an excellent book. If you loved the first one than you will love this one. It includes wonderful activities that both parents and children will enjoy. I was amazed by the creativity and variety of the activities. I did not think that the first book could be topped yet alone matched but it was. Children will enjoy not only playing with the concoctions once they are made but they can also have fun while making the concoctions. I strongly recommend this book and the activities in it for any age. The directions are simple and the material needed to complete the concoctions are few. These activities are perfect for rainy days or any day. Teachers can even adapt these activites to use in their lessons. It would be a great book for use in a day care or for a summer camp. I hope that everyone enjoys this book as much as I do and will continue to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Its Better Than The First Book!, July 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2: More Than 65 New Wacky, Wild & Crazy Concoctions (Paperback)
Its very rare to find a book series where the second in the series is better than the first. But thats not the case with the new Kid Concoctions book. "The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions #2" was a hit the first time my children and I opened the book. Almost all of the projects are made from 3-4 common household ingredients. The projects seem to be even more original and innovative than the projects in the first book! Hats off to the authors for making a book that lives up to its name and out shines the original. A must have book for any parent or grandparent.
