One Of The Best & Most Comprehensive

It's written right there on the front of the book - Understanding the Sport and Skills of Boxing - and it delivers all that and more.

This is really a great book for the person interested in boxing either as a sport, an art or fitness training. It's for the novice and the ring veteran.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good content
Very good and detailed info, but the grammar is horrible.Every other sentence is the politicaly correct "he/she" instead of the correct "he" which makes this book somwhat annoying and tiring to read.So buy it, but if you too find plain bad grammar annoying, like me,get your white out ready.

The Ultimate Boxer is divided into 8 incredibly comprehensive chapters:
Fundamentals
Conditioning
Science
Strategy
Competition
Social aspects
Coaching
Supportive material

Each chapter is complete, informative and educational.

The tips, suggestions and advice are plentiful. There's a great section on how to compete against specific styles - i.e. how to box a croucher, a southpaw, a slugger etc - as well as excellent guidance for fundamentals, conditioning and training exercises

I plan to keep this by my training equipment as a reference guide and use and review over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Knowlegable Book on Olympic-style Boxing, April 5, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Ultimate Boxer: Understanding the Sport and Skills of Boxing (Paperback)
This is the most knowledgable book ever writtien on Olympic-style (amateur) boxing.
The finer points of the game that most people don't even consider, including boxing for judges positioning, computer scoring, five critera for a scoring blow, what to expect as a boxer at a venue, and boxing different styles of boxers are all included. It really shows how boxing is not just getting in the ring and slugging, but a precise and measured art.

The self reflection worksheets are also a valuable tool for keeping track of your training progress for both Olympic-style and professional boxers. I look foward to the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Official Handbook of Boxing!, September 15, 2005

This review is from: The Ultimate Boxer: Understanding the Sport and Skills of Boxing (Paperback)
This book is incredibly detailed on the subject of learning how to box. The author IS a boxing coach and everything in the book comes from that point of view. The book is very well organized and very well written. It has important tips and drills to use after key topics. This book will help you to understand not only the fundamentals, but why you do them. This book should be the official handbook of boxing! Even if you have a coach and are training, I still recommend you get this as it gives you the correct ways to box, train, and strategize from an elite-level boxing coach.

5.0 out of 5 stars How to box - here., January 5, 2008

If you have to get only one book on how to box, this is the one. It has almost all amateur (and some pro) boxing covered. Lots of good exercises, drills, and tactics. The ONLY thing it is lacking in, is pictures - could use more photos for a couple of the techniques.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Publication, July 25, 2010
This review is from: The Ultimate Boxer: Understanding the Sport and Skills of Boxing (Paperback)
"The Ultimate Boxer" by Cristy Halbert is a comprehensive publication. There is something in it for everyone. Beginners and present boxers, as well as coaches will find information that is useful to them. For the working athlete, basic and advanced techniques are covered in detail. For trainers there are tips and important things to consider in dealing with athletes under their supervision. For those developing boxing programs there is information on ring dimensions, and supportive material such as boxing web sites and equipment and apparel resources. There was extensive use of drawings throughout the book and it is this factor that kept me from giving five stars to the publication. There are times when a drawing adequately serves the purpose, but in my opinion the demonstrations of skills are best done by real athletes. Some may have to be posed and others may be action pictures. However, most of the pictures should be images of live persons. In that way, the reader can follow the guidelines of the book even to the point of positioning himself exactly as copied from the example in the book. I still consider this book to be one of the best and most comprehensive books on boxing. I give this book four stars.

By Al Gotay, Ed.D., author of "Boxing Basics" and "Self Defense Basics".

4.0 out of 5 stars Pearls of wisdom in this book, June 21, 2010

This review is from: The Ultimate Boxer: Understanding the Sport and Skills of Boxing (Paperback)
Recommended for those starting out in learning serious fighting and not powder puff hitting. Read everything, talk with everyone, and sort out what you can use. This is a good basic book for understanding the science of boxing. The real learning takes place in sparring and actual boxing.

Quite comprehensive. More than just the basic though I wish it can go more in-depth. One of the best boxing books I can find so far.
