2.0 out of 5 stars Want to love it, but several problems
I have been using various Pur faucet filters through at least 5 units now. Originally the plastic rotate units, then 2 stainless in a row as I moved each time I'd just buy a new one leave the old behind. They are great.....

EXCEPT that the case tends to crack nearest the faucet hookup. This is particularly quick to happen on the units that rotate. But it...

But it has also happened to me with the stainless steel unit just happened to me on a SECOND stainless now.

ALSO the screw-on cap in front is a PAIN to remove. It's round and smooth and hard to find any grip on it when it's screwed in tight. They really should put a couple of flat edges to give your fingers somewhere to grab. Installing is difficult as well getting that last bit of turn-down to get it flush.

I keep coming back to Pur though even with these defects they are a great value.

PUR Water Filter Review \ Hack

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pur Ultimate begins leaking around faucet after 6 months., February 3, 2009
This review is from: Pur Ultimate Faucet Mount Brushed Stainless Steel Horizontal Filtration System (Tools & Hardware)
This is my third Pur Ultimate faucet filter. All three leak at the faucet connection after about 6 months of use- unacceptible. I had them installed by different plumbers, so it's not an installation error. Guess I'll go back to the filter-pitcher, because at $60 for this filter, they can't figure out how to make them last.

Like other reviewers, I have been a Pur filter user for years, but lately the units haven't been lasting more than a few months at a time. I stuck with Pur because of a lack of other options out there similar to Pur. Lately, the units crack or leak or both--definitely not worth the cost. I tried this new design, and so far I'm pleased. It has a cheaper look, though--the 'brushed chrome' in no way matches my faucet like an old model did. I was alarmed at first with the cheap construction, but the easy installation and quick release has me sold. If the unit breaks within a few months, I'll write back about Pur and then buy a different brand. So far, so good.
UPDATE: PUR filter fell off after a week or so. The plastic screw-on ring warps because of the weight of the filter. I contacted PUR, they send another ring attachment. It warped in a matter of days. I called them again, got another ring, and it warped in a matter of days. It keeps falling off the faucet. Horrible design flaw! I've gone to Culligan filters--very simple, less can go wrong.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap product, no longevity., September 4, 2010
By
This review is from: Pur Ultimate Faucet Mount Brushed Stainless Steel Horizontal Filtration System (Tools & Hardware)
I have gone through 3 Pur water filters over the past two years. I will not buy their products any longer. All their faucet filters seem to be prone to leaks within a few months of usage. This product in particular is coated with a chrome colored film that chips away and looks bad, even if the seals were to hold out for more than a few months. If these filters had any longevity they would be great, they are good while they last. But they don't last long enough to be worth the money. I'm going to research the market and make a purchase based upon the units longevity, even if the filters aren't available locally it will be worth it to get them on line rather than replacing the hole filtration unit every 4 to 8 months.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Item, April 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Pur Ultimate Faucet Mount Brushed Stainless Steel Horizontal Filtration System (Tools & Hardware)
I ordered the Pur Water Filtration horizontal brushed stainless steel model as a replacement item and was sent a cheaper plastic version. Order fulfilled by Buy D Best for $53. Identical plastic one sells from Amazon for $33. Will return item. Apparently the stainless steel model has been discontinued. Don't get fooled by the picture, it is the stainless model but a plastic version was sent to me. Newer plastic model is one click attachment, the older stainless model was screw on.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 yeras - no problem, March 21, 2011
This review is from: Pur Ultimate Faucet Mount Brushed Stainless Steel Horizontal Filtration System (Tools & Hardware)
I have been using this filter for about three years and I like it.

Pros:
- It does what it is supposed to do: filters tap water. The filtered water tastes better.
- The unit is reliable, never broke.
- To me, the slower filtered water is a plus because it indicates the many filtering stages it goes through.
- Looks good.

Cons:
- A bit bulky.
- Filters are expensive.
- It seems to suggest filter replacement based on time, but not on volume of used water.

Overall, I am please and would purchase it again. 5 stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Used to be good...now they're JUNK., March 20, 2011
This review is from: Pur Ultimate Faucet Mount Brushed Stainless Steel Horizontal Filtration System (Tools & Hardware)
Just like everyone else has said, the old Pur filters were great. Unfortunately, when I moved from TN to FL I left my old one and had to buy a new unit. I purchased one for my mom at the same time. They are both squirting water in different directions all over our kitchens and it's been less than 9 months. These are NOT the same filtration units that used to be made by Pur....these are junk. Not sure what I'm going to do now. Maybe see how awful tap water really is without filtration?
