Ultimate Camp Cooking is Entertaining and Incredible!,
By Phil Bear (Nampa, ID United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ultimate Camp Cooking (Paperback)
The sun is just starting to shine and we are itching to go camping. We have had Ultimate Camp Cooking for a few weeks now and have been enjoying reading it simply because it is hilarious and entertaining. I must admit, I have even tried out a few of the recipes inside as wait for the rain and snow to clear--and they have all been DELICIOUS! We can't wait, though, to get out in the woods and try them the way they were meant to be done! Ultimate Camp Cooking is a must-have for food and camping enthusiasts. The recipes are easy and delicious!

Entertaining, Good Recipes, But Practical?,
This review is from: Ultimate Camp Cooking (Paperback)
I was skeptical about a cookbook written by two comedians whose stand-up comedy routine centers around ultimate camping. But while it's true that the stories in the book are hilarious, the recipes themselves are for real and nothing like the pork and beans with hot dogs many campers resort to. It's like gourmet cooking for the camper whether grilling or using a dutch oven.My husband and son are the campers in our family so I had hubby read the book too and give me his honest opinion about the recipes. He thought they sounded good but would probably stick with heating food from cans or grilling meat that didn't require much preparation. The recipes are more suitable for a chuck wagon type set-up for a larger group of people, which is basically what the authors do - they host camping trips and cook for the participants. For those who are simply going to enjoy nature, fishing, hiking, etc., and who don't want to spend their time preparing fancier meals, this book is more entertainment than practical. That said, I did find recipes I will use for our everyday meals at home so as a cookbook, this is a good one with recipes such as mexican lasagne, cheese stuffed meatballs, s'mores pies, and various pasta dishes. It is also a fun book that any camping enthusiast would enjoy reading, but I wonder how many would go to the trouble to prepare these kinds of meals at camp because of the planning, equipment, and cooking know-how required. Another option would be prepare some of the recipes ahead of time and simply reheat them at camp. I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited nor required. If I didn't like the book I would say so.

Excellent recipes! Each recipe would be great for camping, picnics or home. I laughed out loud while reading the funny stories between each chapter. The camping advice is great and I can't wait to test out all of the tips. Can't wait for a future cookbook or videos from these funny guys!

Do not leave home without it,
By Aceto "All knowledge is sorrow." (Meilhan Sur Garonne) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Ultimate Camp Cooking (Paperback)
Ultimate Camp Cooking is just the right size to take along with you camping. With eighty recipes, it is comprehensive to get you through many meals -- morning, noon and nightfall. They take care to help you plan everything before leaving. It is well made with heavy gloss paper that is good while cooking in the wild. And I gave that extra star because it is enjoyable to read all the extra material while relaxing after all that cooking over a hot fire. This is a beginner's book. I am an experienced cook but camp cooking is not like cooking at home. It is not even much like cooking in the back yard. These are not recipes that I would normally make at home. But they make just about everybody happy out there. They surprise and surpass all expectations of companion campers. It is well organized up front for planning, right down to packing your cooler. When they call for a dutch oven, which is frequently, they tell you how many briquettes and where to place them. I needed that. It takes the guess work out. Sure they cut some corners, but they make it easy on you while making it good for everybody else. So Pillsbury canned dough is better than lugging everything and adding time and effort from scratch. Unless, of course you do not want to do anything but cook. So buy the shredded mozzarella bags and the Knorr hollandaise. They have nice sauces, soups and dessert. No custom order breakfast, please. But it turns out everybody is joyful with a big helping from the dutch oven even when they are showing you how to use your leftovers, which there never are any. My favorites include bourbon flank steak, tumeric chicken, red wine mushroom sauce and the fresh blueberry cobbler. Go from grub to greatness. One last note. This book is for good sized groups on a camping trip. It is not for those intrepid few on Outward Bound. So it has recipes for salmon, but it is not intended as an in-the-field fresh game cookbook. That is a whole different discipline. This book can make memories that glow like lingering embers for all your friends.

The authors, Pat Mac and Mike Faverman, are great cooks, hilarious comedians, and adventurous campers...and this cookbook is pure gold! If you can appreciate delicious and easy-to-prepare food while "roughing it" out in the woods. . .if you can appreciate not having to spend half your camping trip washing dishes. . .and if you can appreciate some damn funny comedians. . .then this book MUST be in your collection! I'd also highly recommend their DVD series, but I digress :)!Cover-to-cover, this is not your typical cookbook - hilarious commentary mixed with incredible recipes. . .with plenty of great outdoor cooking tips thrown in for good measure. My family and I have enjoyed these recipes so much, that we've purchased several copies. . .one for the trailer. . .and one for the house. To be honest, I'm thinking about ordering another copy to have when I'm. . .uh, otherwise indisposed. Highly recommended! Great camping...great eats...safe travels!

Above average outdoor cooking recipe book.,

This outdoor cooking dutch oven recipe book is definitely above average, but too many of the recipes still call for mixes, canned condensed soups, and refrigerated pillsbury canned biscuits. I was hoping for more real recipes, but there are a numnber of genuinely good ones here too.The book is geared towards cooking with cast iron DO's using disposable aluminum foil cooking inserts. You can still use the recipes without the inserts. You cna also adapt the recipes for use with a anozied aluminum DO's by slightly reducing the number of charcoal briquettes. The good points of the this book are excellent dutch oven cooking instrucitons for each recipe (how many coals on top and bottom) to give newbies lots of confidence, and it gave me a lot of ideas of what and how to cook even if I didn't use the book's recipes verbatim. It also gives some very good cast iron DO cooking tips. I think this book fills a middle niche between the minimum preperation of most DO books geared towards boy scouts, and that of the more home-made from scratch recipes in The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook, Second Edition by Sheila Mills. If I could have only two DO cookbooks, this would probably be one of them. But if I could only have one dutch oven cookbook, this would NOT be it (The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook would be the one!).
