5.0 out of 5 stars Tempting Treats
I'm not sure why the Tuna recipe was not successful for one reviewer, because it is one of my cats' favorites (I have 4 finicky felines). Of the 4 recipes they have tried, the Tuna treats are definitely at the top of their list. While tuna is not my favorite smell, I didn't find it too offensive once cooked and the cats went wild (they even sat up, which is usually...

I thought this book was going to offer recipes for dry cat treats that would stay in a container on the counter like so many of the dog treats...but it if full of recipes that require refrigeration. They are also messy treats. Just not what I thought it would be and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I'm not sure why the Tuna recipe was not successful for one reviewer, because it is one of my cats' favorites (I have 4 finicky felines). Of the 4 recipes they have tried, the Tuna treats are definitely at the top of their list. While tuna is not my favorite smell, I didn't find it too offensive once cooked and the cats went wild (they even sat up, which is usually reserved for cheese treats). I would recommend this cookbook for any cat owner who wants wholesome treats that are not crammed with fillers like the store-bought ones are. I agree that this is a nice gift idea for any cat lover and have an extra copy on-hand just for that occasion.

I found this cat treat cookbook to be just delightful! The recipes are fast, easy, and healthy too. What a fun way to show your cats they are special to you. There is even a recipe for catnip tea. The artwork adds a charming touch. This little book would make a great gift for any cat lover on your list.

5.0 out of 5 stars my cats are finicky, December 11, 2006
This review is from: The Ultimate Cat Treat Cookbook: Homemade Goodies for Finicky Felines (Hardcover)
After years of buying kitty treats from the store only to have at least one (out of three of my cats) turn up their noses, I decided to try making my own.

With the help up this book I have finally come up with a couple of recipes to make treats that all my cats love (and make extra to give to friends with cats). I also feel good that that I can control the quality and freshness of the ingredients.

I absolutely HATED this book. These are junk treats with junk ingredients, some of which call for mass-produced dry cat food as an ingredient. If I wanted to give my cats junk food, I would buy it rather than make it. I haven't bothered to make any of the recipes in the book (I'm a professional chef and have no trouble telling a good recipe from a bad one) and will probably sell this at a garage sale. Also, most of the treats have to be refrigerated, which means they have limited shelf life (even at the proper temperature). If you only have one cat, you may have a hard time feeding kitty all the treats before their shelf life expires. In addition, some of the reviewers stated they liked the graphics, but I wasn't all that impressed. Quite honestly, I prefer photos of the finished product to cartoon drawings of cats in my "cookbooks". I also purchased the dog version of this book and didn't like that one either.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uses ingredients I would not feed to a human or a cat, November 16, 2010

If I'm making treats for my cat I want them to be healthy, hypoallergenic, and of high quality. I was astonished to see that this book actually called for Bisquick in some of the recipes. Bisquick! That stuff is total, nasty tasting garbage -- full of processed, bleached white flour and sugar. Other recipes call for tinned soups (Campbells soups contains DSG and DSI and other chemical flavourings.) There is just too much in here that relies on unhealthy food that would not take up residence in my kitchen.

As humans we often eat thing we shouldn't, but we should not be feeding them to our pets -- especially to cats, which are carnivores that often do not do well on a diet with a lot of grains and sugars.

2.0 out of 5 stars "Meh," said the cat, but DOGS love them!, July 20, 2011
This review is from: The Ultimate Cat Treat Cookbook: Homemade Goodies for Finicky Felines (Hardcover)
Our cat didn't like them. I tried 5 different recipes, choosing carefully because our cat was on a restricted diet, and he didn't like any of them. I sent some to a "family member" cat on the other coast, and she liked them okay, I guess, although maybe they just didn't tell me the truth. Well, some of the recipes are VERY sloppy, but others are dry, and most of them need refrigeration--NO PRESERVATIVES are added to these recipes as far as I can see. I'll probably try again with our current felines, when they settle in, but I'm not real excited about it. On the other hand, our neighbor's dog LOVED some of the tuna treats.

I have a feeling this book will be a hit or a miss, depending on your cats. My cats never really got into the treats I made them and some of the crunchy treats (which contain bacon, flour, and dry food) may be more suitable for dogs. Other treats are simple recipes you can find online for free, like mixing canned food with fried eggs and cheese.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, GREAT illustrations, January 3, 2007

These are some good recipes, but what really shines is the illustrations. I will be watching Troy Cummings' career with great interest.
