5.0 out of 5 stars Third is a six part essential series of Holiday Favorites

3.0 out of 5 stars Christmas vacation!
I purchased this CD because of the Christmas vacation song by Mavis Staples. This is the theme song to my favorite christmas movie with the same title with Chevy Chase. The rest of the album is O.K....wish the CD case had not arrived cracked...I had to pry out the CD and the case is ruined. The CD, though, played Christmas vacation perfectly and I was able to transfer...

5.0 out of 5 stars Third is a six part essential series of Holiday Favorites, October 12, 2004
This review is from: The Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 3 - WOGL 98.1 Philadelphia (Audio CD)
This is the third of six volumes. All offer some great holiday recordings but none are perfect. Depending on your musical tastes, you can select quite a few tracks from each volume to put together a first-rate mix tape or CD.

The first volume offers the most "classics" but this volume includes such essentials as Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," "Happy Holiday" by Andy Williams, "Winter Wonderland" by Johnny Mathis, and "Home For The Holidays" by Perry Como.

Each volume also gives you a few holiday favorites from the cream of '60s Motown (in this volume it's "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me" by the Supremes) and '70s pop/soul (here it is "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano). You also get recent soundtrack efforts by Darlene Love ("All Alone On Christmas" from Home Alone 2") and Mavis Staples (theme from "Christmas Vacation") that give this set a slightly more modern slant than the first two volumes.

Perhaps the most unique feature of this series is the inclusion of new holiday recordings by your favorite Doo Wop artists that you won't find anywhere else. On this volume, Earl Chance of the Earls contributes "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" while Lou Christie delivers a heavenly version of "O Holy Night" that features backing by the Pittsburgh Boys Choir.

While I don't really care for the inclusion of silly songs like "Chrissy The Christmas Mouse" by Debbie Reynolds & Donald O'Connor or "Jingle Bells" by the Singing Dogs, I am sure they have their supporters. Novelty tunes undoubtably hold a significant spot in the world of Christmas music.

If you don't have any of these collections and are on a limited budget, I suggest buying them in numerical order (One first, Six last) until you get them all. Nearly every holiday recording of note - plus many unknown gems - are found on these discs.

I ordered this because I wanted the "Christmas Vacation" song. There are some other songs on their that are fun or that you don't hear day after day after day on radio stations, but most are the same stuff.

This is a pretty good Christmas CD. Some of the songs like "Christmas Vacation" by Mavis Staples are not easy to find.

This is an excellent selection of Classic Holiday songs by the original artists. It includes the original hit by Mavis Staples, "Christmas Vacation". This is the title track from the "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" movie. This was the main reason that I purchased this album.

Ths is a great CD for Christmas. In particular, there's an old song by Debbie Reynolds called, "Chrissy the Christmas Mouse" that you rarely hear and it is a happy, spirit lifting song. I hope it makes a come back by next season.

I bought this album only because it has the theme song from the movie, "Christmas Vacation". The only other album I've found this song on is the original soundtrack, which is long out of print. The only reason I give it only three stars is because I don't care for half the other Christmas songs. That's typical for any album, though. I'm very happy with my purchase.

The variety is outstanding. Cuts by Darlene Love, Mavis Staples, and Lou Christie stand out, as do the classics by Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles and of course, Bing Crosby. Tremendous!
