4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, though maybe not 'ultimate'
If you love Christmas as much as I do, you will probably enjoy this album. It features plenty of standard favorites - especially sung by the MoTab, who seem to be a holiday staple. I probably wouldn't pay $17.95 just to hear songs like 'The Little Drummer Boy' of 'We Wish You a Merry Christmas.'

3.0 out of 5 stars Not ultimate, but truly classical
Good mix of the expected ("Silent Night", "O Come All Ye Faithful", etc) and the unexpected (the Vivaldi Gloria, Gabrieli, Schutz). Kudos to the Sony team for uniform clarity & quality of sound, despite source material from 1959 through 1998. Word to the wise: the performance of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" credited to Marilyn Horne is...

What makes this compillation interesting is the liberal sprinkling of less traditional - or, anyway, less well-known - classical pieces. Vivaldi's 'Gloria', Corelli's 'Christmas Concerto', and the opera 'Hansel and Gretel' all make an appearance. The standout, in my mind, is the ethereally beautiful 'Watt's Cradle Hymn,' which I have never seen or heard anywhere else - that one song alone makes this album worth a listen.

Word to the wise: the performance of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" credited to Marilyn Horne is actually by Eileen Farrell from her excellent "Carols for Christmas Eve" release. No disrespect to Ms Horne, who is well represented by two performances with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. If you're truly a classical music fan but don't mind a traditional carol or two, this is an excellent buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly beautiful!, January 14, 2007
This review is from: Ultimate Classical Christmas Album of All Time (Audio CD)
Over and over we played "Die Menge der Engel" - - it is stunningly beautiful! The loftiness of the voices, wonderful.

We loved the boys/children's choruses on many of the other pieces on the album. Duets by Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavorati - - magnifico!

It is a pleasant compilation of traditional favorites and awesome classical pieces that are worth listening to again and again.

The Ultimate Classical Christmas Album of All Time lives up to its title. The range of music over time and mix of instrumental and vocal provides a harmonious backdrop to wrapping Christmas presents. The volume (length) of music is particularly nice as one hates to end something so good. Whether for those who love classical music, or those who simply want good background, I recommend this CD.

Very fine recording of Christmas music. The selections on the disc are not the old standards but music less common that should be performed more frequently in the Christmas season. The recording quality is excellent and individual performances make the entire listening time most relaxing and enjoyable.

I ordered this cd set in hope that I could play beautiful music this holiday season that would remind me of the holy aspect of these most holy of days and this set has delivered. The music is absolutely beautiful and so pleasant to listen to during the day. No screeching about Frosty, no exclamations about Rudolph- just beautiful instrumentals and chorals and some vocals gently reminding me of the reason for the season.

I bought the Ultimate Classical Christmas Album of All Time because I needed an additional purchase for super saver free shipping. I was surprised and pleased to discover what a delightful 2-disc album I had bought. A great selection of classical instrumental and vocal Christmas music!

A nice collection of a variety of Christmas music. Much is available separately, but it is nice to have it on one CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not "Ultimate" for sure., January 3, 2011

I purchased this CD for about $5. Disc one was like being at church on any regular day. I did not hear much classical Christmas music, but lots of choir music. And, the first song was such a disappointment. I really loved this song and the rendition of it was just too mellow with one sorrowful voice and no instrumental backup. Disc two was better with more of the classics being played the way I remembered. My only favorite was the March from the Nutcracker Ballet performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra. Both discs were quite boring and very down beat for the most part. I was not inspired to bake cookies, shop for presents nor decorate. I did get myself a shot of Jack Daniels, though.
