5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Dave Mason Collection available., September 23, 2001

This is the only Dave Mason collection to span his entire career starting from his traffic days in the late 1960's. The cd also marks the first time his MCA and columbia hits are on one disc. Such gems as "Feelin Alright", "Only You Know And I Know", "WE Just Disagree" and the closet classic "To Be Free" are all here to enjoy. Almost every track from his "Alone Together" album [his greatest work] is right here to enjoy. For casual fans or the uninitiated this is without a doubt your best bet to enjoy a career overview of a great songwriter and guitar player who held his own with the Rock n Roll elite of the early 1970's.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dave In Changes, March 3, 2000
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
It would seem utterly simple, the world didn't need another so-so Dave Mason compilation. His career, while hitting a commercial peak in the latter seventies, has been a disappointment for the most part, especially after his great debut long-player, "Alone Together." A solo single from 1969, "Little Woman," would have been a welcomed treat, as would any tracks from the long-gone, "Dave Mason Is Alive." If there's any reason at all to own "Ultimate Collection," it's for the oft-forgotten, "Satin Red And Black Velvet Woman." These cross-label compilations are generally to be avoided, as labels often loan out reference master tapes to other labels, resulting in inferior quality of sound. Unless you're of the notion of having to have the one exclusive track, fans and casual listeners should skip this superflous release.

2.0 out of 5 stars ultimate?, January 11, 2002

although the line-up here contains all very tasty tunes, i'd find it hard to call a dave mason compilation 'ultimate' if it lacks both "pearly queen" & "all along the watchtower". tasty? yes. ultimate? no. if you want an overview of masons career, be a sport about it & pick up a couple early discs ("alone together" is a must) & maybe get "certified live". if you like that, then pick up some others. this collection ("ultimate") is a 'shotgun' approach - dave masons music deserves better.
peace out - space puppy
