4.0 out of 5 stars a bargain collection for London fans!, February 22, 2007

This 3-disc set is exceptional value for Julie London fans, comprising tracks from the early years of her recording career, through the Liberty singles as well as her Capitol recordings.

Julie London's sultry, come-hither vocal delivery is evident throughout such numbers as "'Round Midnight", "When I Fall in Love", "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning", "Hot Toddy" and "I Got it Bad". There are also fun numbers like "Give a Little Whistle" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".

Julie London was her own worst enemy when it came to her musical career; she never felt that her voice was special, nor did she think her overall musicality as good as other jazz singers of the period. While she did have some healthy competition from such singers as June Christy, Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee, Ms London managed to hold her own, garnered a legion of devoted fans, and recorded many chart albums.

A fantastic gift for the Julie London fan in your house!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beautiful, January 2, 2010

Imagine music with a melody and lyrics you can understand and hum or sing along with. They just don't make much of this kind of music anymore. Maybe I'm getting old but I love these old standards, especially the way London sings them, earthy and sensual. This was actually my first London CD. I feel it's a good sampling of all her music, great for someone just getting discovering her and who likes this type of thing. Wonderful listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Julie London lovers, November 7, 2009

Did this compilation bring back past memories. Julie used to be among my favorite singers during my late teens and early twenties. Her classic is, of course, "Cry Me A River." NO ONE does it like she ! But every song included here is really a classic. I had purchased many of her LP's' and yet had not digitized them. Thus was very excited to see that this DVD was available. It allows for her unique, sultry voice to stand the test of time. She's truly great and THIS is a great collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Julie London still enchants, January 6, 2009

Julie London is a timeless and sensual singer who excels at the standards for female vocalists. A smoky night club with well-dressed and well-heeled patrons seems just right for her intimate and individual style. The selections are classics. I purchased this CD for my son, who fell in love with her during the "Emergency" TV show days. He was reintroduced to her as the singer of the theme song from the l957 film "Boy on a Dolphin" and wanted to purchase the film score music. It's not available, one recent edition of 1500 sold out in hours, so I purchased Julie's collection for him which includes the desired song. It came all the way from Australia. This score and Julie's collection should be better known here, as both are well worth repeated listening by anyone who loves love songs.....

I have several albums by Julie London and there are a lot of "repeats" but this is a good collection. Julie London is one of my favorite female vocalists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alert! Julie London fans, February 9, 2011
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
OK. Let's assume you are a Julie London fan like me. This 3-CD collection contains 45 of her best songs. Example: "Cry Me A River" with Barney Kessels' famous comping, especially the intro. Is there any point to my saying that if you love her singing as I do.....This compilation of a lifetime is what you've been waiting for. I didn't know her or husband Bobby Troup, but if you could give more than 5 Stars to an album I would surely do it. One more tune:Ellingtons' "I Got it Bad & that ain't good." 'nuff said.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fifties Style That Sounds As Great Today, July 13, 2007
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
To quote from the liner note, Julie London said "I only have a thimbleful of voice", which self-deprecating remark was only half the truth. Granted, her voice lacked volume, but it made up for it in all sorts of other ways, which combined to create the sort of haunting atmosphere that lingered long after she'd finished singing.

She was selective about her choice of material, and this compilation rounds up some of her best sides. Accompaniments are superb, and sound quality first-rate, but I've stopped short at four stars for two reasons. First, I'd like to know who's playing behind her on each track, but the listing is silent on that score, and secondly, because a 3-CD set really ought to provide more than a total of just 45 tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Know You Are Aging..., May 15, 2011

... when you are from the era of the Beatles and you start listening to music like this!

I ran across some You Tube videos featuring Ms. London. She grabbed my interest the same what Joni James videos did. Like the Joni James CD, I have really enjoyed this recording. Both of those women were very good singers. But they are from a different era. You either like music from that period or you don't. As to the sonic quality of the CD, I have nothing to compare it to with respect to other Julie London recordings, but I have no complaints. I think it sounds very good considering the age of the master recordings.
